In a remote tropical island, a mysterious woman sets a surreal tone, but the core narrative follows two starkly different prisoners in a Latin American jail. Two prisoners in a stark cell during Brazil’s military dictatorship form an unlikely bond. Valentin Arregui, a man who has already endured torture for his political activities, shares the space with Luis Molina, a gay inmate imprisoned for “corrupting an underage youth,” whose sharp wit and fragile hope keep him tethered to life inside the walls. He is joined by the memory of his lover, Marta, whose name becomes a beacon in the dark as Molina clings to the past to survive the present.
To pass the endless hours, Molina recounts memories from one of his favorite films—a wartime romantic thriller that is also Nazi propaganda film. He weaves the film’s characters into a vivid narrative meant to comfort Valentin and distract him from the harsh realities of political imprisonment and the distance from loved ones. The storytelling becomes a shared ritual, a way to breathe, plan, and dream despite the iron bars that press in around them.
Valentin’s presence in the cell gradually nudges Molina toward a deeper sense of self-worth and a renewed sense of political commitment, even as Molina’s own views on romance and cinematic escapism clash with Valentin’s grimmer realism. Yet an unlikely friendship blooms, built on small acts of trust and a mutual desire to resist the eroding power of fear.
Behind the scenes, a grim scheme unfolds: Valentin is being poisoned by his jailers to create a pliant ally for Molina, who is secretly spying on Valentin for the secret police. Molina’s mission is double-edged—gain Valentin’s trust while feeding information to the authorities in the hopes of earning parole and helping to dismantle the revolutionary group from within.
When Molina finally confesses his love for Valentin, their bond deepens into a physical and emotional connection on Molina’s last night in prison. A surprising turn brings parole for Molina, and Valentin provides him a telephone number and a message for his comrades. Molina, now free, hesitates at first to call the number, fearful of treachery, but he ultimately reaches out and agrees to meet the revolutionaries.
The rendezvous, however, is a trap. Molina is watched by the secret police, and a violent gun battle erupts as he encounters the people he hoped to meet. Wounded and isolated in the street, Molina is captured by the police who demand the number he was given, a number that could expose the network he’s supposedly serving. He refuses to reveal it, dies on the run, and the authorities dump his body in a rubbish pit, spinning a tale of betrayal and coercion to justify the tragedy.
Back in the prison, Valentin endures further torture until a compassionate doctor administers morphine to ease his sleep. Just when it seems he may succumb to his wounds, he experiences a vision of escape: he and Marta on a tropical island, free at last. The film’s final echo finds them slipping away together by boat, fading into the distance as a new dawn rises over the sea.
