Dale, who is currently held on remand and awaiting his court hearing, finds himself in a system fraught with brutality and injustice. Despite not yet being sentenced, he endures repeated and savage beatings, highlighting the cruel reality of his situation. The first of these violent assaults, which is depicted on screen as lasting less than three minutes, is based on an incident that reportedly extended over an exhausting seven hours, emphasizing the brutal reality behind the scenes.

At first, Dale grapples with the physical and psychological torment inflicted upon him. During the day, prison authorities attempt to crush his resolve by forcing him to perform strenuous labor, such as smashing blue-stone with a pick, which resonates with Australia’s deep-rooted convict history. Meanwhile, other inmates are subjected to humiliating acts, including licking faeces off toilet doors, designed to demean and dehumanize them further. As the days pass, Dale begins to become numb to the constant violence and horror, developing an inner resilience and finding subtle ways to survive and channel his anger.

There are powerful moments where Dale is shown pacing his cell stark naked and mumbling incoherently, suggesting that the relentless abuse has pushed him dangerously close to the brink of insanity. It is only when he boldly proclaims, > “I’ve resigned from this life,” < that a glimmer of resistance appears. He urges the other prisoners to do the same, refusing to continue participating in the dehumanizing prison routines. In the climactic final scenes, Dale walks confidently from the prison, heading toward his trial. This act symbolizes the system’s failure to produce obedient, subdued bodies, revealing its inability to crush the human spirit completely. Despite being within the prison walls and subjected to its oppressive machinery, Dale maintains his sanity and refuses to be silenced.
