After a client (a police officer) claimed Nancy tried to escape, Mia had her locked in the attic. Cameron continued to visit Nancy, bringing crackers and water after secretly drugging Pastor (the pimp). However, Nancy eventually died from heatstroke due to the extreme heat and lack of proper ventilation in the attic.

Cameron's covert kindness toward Nancy was one of the few moments of humanity in the film.

One of Pastor's clients was a police officer who was told about Mia's operation but chose to do nothing. He continued to use the services and even brought Nancy back to Mia, claiming she tried to escape. His complicity highlights the corruption and failure of law enforcement to protect the victims.

The police officer's inaction was a stark example of systemic failure.

The landlord at Angela's house in Atlanta became nosy after neighbors complained about smells. During a visit, he heard sounds from the basement, broke open the door, and found Harland and Joanne. He immediately called the police, leading to the arrest of Mia, Chris, Angela, and Pastor.

The captives had been moved multiple times, but eventually the operation grew too large to hide.

Five years after being imprisoned, Mia became eligible for parole. Cameron and Patricia attended the hearing. When given the chance to speak, Cameron told Mia that locking her in the closet did not make her family stronger and called her evil. The parole board denied Mia's release, and she was sent back to prison.
