Martin “Mohamed” Lundy, portrayed by Boyd Holbrook, emerges from 17 long years in prison thanks to the unwavering efforts of the Innocence Project. He is now trying to piece together a new life in Louisiana, finding solace at the Second Chance animal shelter where he works under the nurturing supervision of Linda Workman. This shelter becomes a haven for both animals and people yearning for a second chance at life.

When Doris Lamb, played by Elisabeth Moss, arrives with her severely injured dog, it is evident that she and her husband John, who is an unsympathetic police officer, are in dire need of assistance. Despite the veterinarian’s diligent efforts, the dog has to be euthanized, plunging Doris into a state of grief that drives her to seek comfort at the shelter. Little does she know that Mohamed, empathetic to her plight and recognizing the desperation written on her face, decides to shelter her.

As the story unfolds, Mohamed discovers that Doris’ husband has recently died under mysterious circumstances, placing her in the spotlight of an investigation by the authorities. They begin to look to Mohamed for vital information that could solve the case. Yet, amid this turmoil, an unexpected connection blossoms between Mohamed and Doris as they find solace in their shared struggles. Unknown to everyone, Doris is secretly residing at Mohamed’s apartment, living in hiding.

Doris’ imagination leads her to believe she sees her dog outside Mohamed’s apartment, prompting her to recklessly sprint after it. In the ensuing chaos, she inadvertently locks herself outside, compelling Mohamed to return home only to find her anxiously waiting at the door. Together, they confront the reality that staying in one place may draw the attention of law enforcement, igniting the need for an impromptu escape.

However, their escape takes a grim turn when they are apprehended by police during a harrowing standoff on the highway. Mohamed reaches into his pocket for something, only to have it wrested from him as he suffers a gunshot wound that leaves him gravely injured. As prayer beads tumble from his pocket, they hit the ground, serving as a poignant reminder of hope amidst despair.

Remarkably, Mohamed survives and continues to visit Doris while she is incarcerated, serving time for the alleged murder of her husband. The outcome of her trial lingers in uncertainty, just like the depth of her feelings for Mohamed, encapsulating the enduring themes of redemption and the resilience of the human spirit.
