Kerala Varma Pazhassi Raja

The movie begins in 1796, during the final years of the First Pazhassi Revolt (1793–1797), which was a significant uprising against the dominance of the East India Company in the Malabar region. The story is set against the backdrop of widespread discontent among the native people, who were protesting against the exploitation of their resources by the colonizers. At the center of this historic struggle is Kerala Varma, the Raja of Pazhassi, a courageous leader from the Kottayam house, who rises to defend his people’s sovereignty.

The rebellion gains momentum as the conflict intensifies between the Raja and the East India Company, which is determined to suppress the uprising. The company’s forces, led by officials like Assistant Collector Thomas Hervey Baber and others, act against Pazhassi Raja with the support of their loyal allies. However, the Raja’s resilience and strategic brilliance force them to confront a formidable guerrilla warfare movement rooted in the jungles of Wayanad.

In the early stages of the conflict, Pazhassi Raja escapes into the dense forests, where he forms alliances with local tribal groups. Among them is Neeli (/actor/padmapriya-janakiraman), a tribal woman who, along with her fiancé Thalakkal Chandu (/actor/manoj-k-jayan), an expert soldier from the Kurichya community, becomes instrumental in his resistance. Despite losing many battles and facing hardships, the Raja’s determination remains unwavering as he fights for his land and people.

The film highlights several key moments, like when the Raja’s forces capture and treat Thomas Baber and Dora (/actor/linda-arsenio) as guests, showing his sense of honor and humanity despite the ongoing war. Dora’s character reveals her realization of the company’s treachery, especially after witnessing their betrayal and cruelty—her moral conflict underscores the personal cost of the rebellion.

The Company’s tactics evolve, involving heavily armed troops and deceit, which lead to betrayals within the tribal alliances. Tragically, Thalakkal Chandu (/actor/manoj-k-jayan) is captured and executed after being betrayed by a tribal leader, demonstrating the brutal costs of war. The Raja’s loyal supporter Edachena Kunkan (/actor/r-sarathkumar) fights valiantly but is ultimately murdered by the troops. Facing insurmountable odds, Pazhassi Raja himself chooses death over surrender, committing suicide rather than being captured, symbolizing his unwavering spirit.

Despite his death, the story ends with a dignified tribute. As the assistant collector (played by Thomas Baber) places Pazhassi Raja’s body in a litter, he expresses respect with the words:

“He was our enemy. But he was a great warrior, a great man and we honour him.”

This moment encapsulates the complex legacy of Pazhassi Raja — a fierce leader who fought fiercely for his land, and whose bravery left an indelible mark on history. The Company officers salute his body, acknowledging his strength and the profound impact he had on their conscience, even amidst the colonizers’ oppressive motives.

The film richly portrays the struggles, sacrifices, and unwavering patriotism of Pazhassi Raja, painting a vivid picture of a legendary leader whose fight for freedom continues to inspire generations.
