The Battle at Lake Changjin

Wu Jing plays [Wu Qianli], the veteran commander of the PLA’s 7th Company, who returns home after the civil war and tells his family that his brother Wu Baili was killed in action. With a land allotment earned through service, he promises to build a home for his parents, but the prospect of leave evaporates when China enters the Korean War. His younger brother, Jackson Yee, Wanli, asks to join him, yet is initially refused.

The narrative leaps to 15 September 1950, during the heat of the Battle of Incheon. American air power sweeps through an Andong Province village as a grim prelude to what follows. A few weeks later, the scene shifts to Beijing, 4 October 1950, where the Politburo meets in Zhongnanhai to assess the war. Mao Zedong, Tang Guoqiang, asks whether crossing the 38th parallel means stepping toward the Yalu; a military briefer insists that simply stationing forces in Taiwan signals an invasion of China, and that the U.S. presence in Korea threatens China’s security.

Against his will, Qianli’s family life collides with the war when Wanli secretly enlists and ends up in the same company. Wanli endures harassment from fellow soldiers as the unit travels toward Korea, and Qianli initially balks at giving him a rifle. A bombed train corridor forces the 7th Company to press on on foot, dodging hostile aircraft, until they stumble upon a frontline skirmish and come to the aid of Chinese soldiers. The brothers find themselves facing danger together, and they manage to kill four American soldiers in close combat while evading a tank.

The company finally reaches the front and, during a brief respite, Mao Zedong’s son Anying, Huang Xuan, known by the pseudonym “Liu,” helps distribute clothing to the weary troops. The front is a harsh winter theater, with snowbound supply lines and bitter cold as American soldiers celebrate Thanksgiving and eye a possible homeward boundary. Anying remains in the mountains to help, but a U.S. airstrike targets the base where he is stationed, and he is killed while attempting to recover a map.

The 27 November push opens with Chinese forces swarming the U.S. Army’s 31st Infantry at Sinhung-ni. In a pivotal moment, Qianli shoots the U.S. commander, Colonel Allan MacLean, but then prevents Wanli from executing the prisoner. Reinforcements arrive at Hagaru-ri to bolster Sinhung-ni, and a U.S. Corsair, tracking the base, is shot down by a Chinese soldier wielding a bazooka. Lei Suisheng, Hu Jun, commandeers a jeep with the smoke marker to rejoin the retreat, only to be cut down by American bombers as the column pulls back.

The action shifts again to Hill 1071, where Yang Gensi, Ou Hao, stands as the last surviving member of his unit and sacrifices himself by charging a line of tanks with a satchel charge. A retreating U.S. Marine convoy discovers bodies of Chinese soldiers frozen at their post, and General Oliver P. Smith salutes them, his voiceover concluding that fighting such resolute troops was not in the U.S. cards to win.

The closing montage returns to Hungnam, where a mass grave underscores the evacuation of 105,000 U.S. troops by 24 December and the fall of Hungnam to the 9th Corps. The captions position the Battle of Lake Changjin as a decisive example of how Chinese forces stifled MacArthur’s Christmas timetable and advanced the broader objective of resisting U.S. aggression and aiding Korea, even as more than 197,000 Chinese soldiers lost their lives. The film closes with a sobering reminder that the war’s costs were borne by both sides, and that the memories of those who fought—especially the stubborn will of the seventh company—endured long after the last shot was fired.
