Terry Collins [David McCallum] is a small‑time car mechanic with a growing hunger for something more dangerous than his day job. A #12 double‑decker bus bound for Harlesden threads through London and stops in Shepherd’s Bush, where an elderly man is robbed in an alley—an opening jolt that drags this night into a net of crime. At the Adam and Eve Club, a venue where erotic dances light up the stage, Terry Collins [David McCallum] sits with Joe Lucas [Brian Weske] at the outer bar and presses to see the club’s owner, the feared Jacko Fielding, who is flanked by his main girl, Sue [Jill Ireland]. Julie, the hatcheck girl, brings in the night’s takings, and Terry’s eyes follow the money with a greedy impatience. Inside, Terry watches Sue strip for an audience mostly composed of older men, the glow of the lights catching on his cigarette as he savors a fading chance to claim what he wants. The tension thickens: Terry is obsessed with Sue, yet the powerful Jacko stands between them, complicating any pure pursuit of desire.

Back at his working‑class home, the morning becomes a test of loyalty and heat. Terry needles his father, mocking his beer habit, while his mother, Mrs. Collins [Edna Doré], tries to keep the peace. The Daily Express on the kitchen table bears grim news: the man who killed the bus passenger is named, and the paper hints at a life that might end behind bars. The household atmosphere grows tenser as the family confronts the shadow of a murder that the city believes ties back to the club. The world outside feels tighter, more watchful, and the line between want and crime starts to blur.

Johnny Calvert [Kenneth Cope] arrives at Terry’s mother’s house looking for Terry, only to be welcomed into the uneasy morning. The police have Johnny on their radar because of his robbery past, and they question him about an Austin A40 while the fear of being implicated lingers in the air. At the same time, Terry’s path crosses Joe—who hints that he knows the truth about the murder—and a blow lands, sending Joe reeling and widening the rift between the two men. A plan soon takes shape: Terry suggests a bold robbery of the Adam and Eve Club to cash in on its hidden wealth, and Johnny reemerges as a willing ally. Johnny reminds Terry that Sue, Johnny’s old girlfriend, was forced to strip to survive when Johnny was behind bars, and together they head toward the club with a fragile, dangerous confidence.

In the club’s backroom, Jacko invites Terry into the office as Johnny slips backstage and confronts Sue in her dressing room. She swears she has stayed true since Johnny left, and the pair share a brittle kiss as they try to untangle their past. Jacko keeps a watchful eye, while Terry relaxes with a drink, his gaze fixed on the club’s safe and the possibility of a quick payday. Johnny returns to the bar, and Joe’s threat to reveal what he knows looms large, but Terry answers with a larger risk: money now, consequences later. The mood crackles with the prospect of a clean getaway that never seems clean enough.

The heist unfolds with alarming precision: the caretaker is coerced into opening the club office so the safe can be blown and emptied. Terry double‑crosses Johnny by knocking him unconscious and slipping away with the loot, just as the caretaker’s alarm triggers a warning. Johnny is left to face the consequences as the police close in, and he confesses to the authorities that Terry was his partner, painting a grim portrait of betrayal under pressure.

Terry rushes to Johnny’s flat, where Sue awaits and the possibility of escape flickers again. When Sue resists, demanding to know what happened to Johnny, Terry attempts to abduct her at gunpoint. The police arrive, and what follows becomes a tense standoff. Terry traps Sue and Mr. Rose [Meier Tzelniker], the elderly tailor who shares the adjacent flat, in a hostage scenario that turns increasingly desperate. Mr. Rose tries to persuade Terry to surrender his weapon, appealing to a human decency that still flickers beneath the crime. The police break through, and in the ensuing chaos, Terry fatally shoots Mr. Rose by accident, a tragedy that underscores the film’s brutal gravity. Terry is dragged away by the police, crying out in rage and fear as the life slips from Mr. Rose and Sue clutches him, caught between love, guilt, and the collapse of a night that offered so little and demanded so much. The city’s murky underbelly has claimed another victim, and the story closes on a note of shock, leaving the viewer to ponder what drove ordinary people toward such desperate choices.
