When newlywed Madeleine (Embeth Davidtz), an art dealer, ventures from Chicago to North Carolina in search of a local, self-taught artist, she seizes the chance to meet her husband George’s (Alessandro Nivola) family, who reside nearby. This family includes his stern and judgmental mother Peg (Celia Weston), his introspective father Eugene (Scott Wilson), and his brooding brother Johnny (Benjamin McKenzie). Johnny, though married, still lives at home while he studies for his high school equivalence certificate and works at Replacements, Ltd. as an order processor. His marriage to his wife Ashley (Amy Adams) is strained, as Ashley believes that having a baby would mend their relationship.

During their visit, Madeleine forms a bond with the bubbly and somewhat naive Ashley. The family includes her in various activities, such as a church service and Ashley’s baby shower, which highlight the strong Southern family values that George holds dear. As Madeleine navigates this new environment, she realizes that despite being married for six months, she knows surprisingly little about her husband, having only known him for a week prior to their wedding.

The plot thickens when the artist Madeleine is pursuing hesitates to sign a contract with her gallery. When Ashley goes into labor, the family rushes to the hospital. However, Madeleine decides to prioritize signing the artist, much to George’s displeasure. Tragically, Ashley’s baby boy is stillborn, and she reveals that she intended to name him “Junebug.” This devastating event casts a shadow over the family’s dynamics as George and Madeleine prepare to return to Chicago, leaving behind a complicated tapestry of relationships and emotions.
