In 1931 Paris, the talented French writer, Anaïs Nin, enjoys both emotional and financial backing from her British banker husband, Hugo. Despite his dedication and sacrifices to support her burgeoning career, she often laments his bureaucratic ways, yearning instead for the companionship and thrilling company of other “creative” souls. An intriguing turn of events occurs when Hugo introduces Henry Miller, an American novelist staying with their eccentric playwright friend, Osborn. Osborn claims that while Henry’s work resonates with the common person, the explicit nature of his writing, particularly surrounding sexual themes, will ultimately bar him from publication.

Intrigued by Henry’s persona, Anaïs takes it upon herself to lend him her typewriter, leading her to Osborn’s dilapidated home, where she discovers him entangled with three naked women after a wild night. Meanwhile, Henry is lost in thought, watching a film that brings back painful memories of his estranged wife, June. The film’s actress bears a striking resemblance to June, and Henry, reminded of the turmoil of their relationship, finds himself fleeing from Anaïs’ attempt at comfort.

In the depths of a backstreet café, he shares his sorrow with Anaïs, revealing how June was both his muse and his tormentor—a woman whose elaborate tales and past led him to seek creative solace in Paris after discovering her disturbing source of income. Anaïs, moved by his story, lends him financial support and follows him into the shadows of a nearby brothel.

Soon, the beautiful June Miller arrives in Paris, hoping to rekindle her relationship with Henry. Anaïs and Hugo quickly grow close with the Millers, yet June’s sudden desire to return to America sets off a series of dramatic events. Struggling with finances, Anaïs selflessly offers June cash to secure her passage, unaware that June plans to exchange her body for a ticket instead.

The complexities deepen when Anaïs, intrigued by June, joins her at Henry’s studio to read his unfinished manuscript of Tropic of Cancer. June, outraged upon realizing her character’s reflection in the story, argues heatedly with Henry about his lack of appreciation for beauty and ultimately storms away. With an urgent need to escape her reality, June confides in Anaïs at a lesbian nightclub, exploring their desires over drinks and cathartic confessions, enriching their bond through shared secrets and intimate experiences.

After June leaves, Anaïs and Hugo meet Henry again, where she reveals her intentions to pen a book inspired by June. In a moment of reckless passion, she and Henry share an intimate encounter behind the scenes of the nightclub. This leads Anaïs into a tumultuous affair with him, completely surrendering to the allure of the Parisian underworld filled with vibrant personalities, including contortionists and photographers like Brassi.

Their emotional exchanges intensify, culminating in Anaïs sharing her private journals. Yet, as Henry begins to meddle with her work, insisting on editorial changes to enhance its impact, a rift forms between them. This tension erupts during an Art Student’s Ball, driving them apart momentarily until reconciliation brings them back together. A night filled with exploration leads Anaïs to engage in indiscretions, even with Hugo, creating a labyrinth of passions and guilt.

Encounters continue to spiral as Anaïs seduces her cousin, Eduardo, only to find herself tangled in her emotions for both Henry and June. As Henry completes Tropic of Cancer using Anaïs’s typewriter, the delicate balance of their connection threatens to shatter when Hugo unexpectedly returns home. In an attempt to shield him from Henry’s presence, Anaïs quickly creates a web of fabrication, only for the truth to unfurl through the tangled sheets of desire.

Tensions rise when Henry’s new publisher arrives at a party, and June’s frustration boils over upon learning of the meager profits that Henry will gain from his book.
