Joseph

In Canaan, Joseph is the second youngest son of Jacob and Rachel. Jacob shows him special favor by giving him a beautiful coat, signaling that Joseph will be his successor. This favoritism sows jealousy among his brothers and foreshadows the trials to come.

Enraged by jealousy, Joseph's brothers trap him and sell him to traders bound for Egypt. They deceitfully present their father with Joseph's coat to hide their betrayal. Reuben attempts to rescue him, but Joseph is taken far from home.

In Potiphar's household, Joseph proves to be capable and trustworthy, earning a position of responsibility. The overseer Ednan resents him and torments him for refusing to show deference. Despite the mistreatment, Joseph's skill and integrity gradually win Ednan's respect.

Potiphar's wife seduces Joseph, but he resists. She later falsely accuses him of rape, leading to his imprisonment. The incident shows the danger Joseph faces despite his innocence.

In Pharaoh's prison, Joseph gains a reputation as a gifted interpreter of dreams. He correctly interprets the dreams of the cupbearer and the baker, who are imprisoned for suspicion of theft. These interpretations bring him to the attention of the wider royal court.

Pharaoh asks Joseph to interpret his troubling dreams. Joseph explains that seven years of plenty will be followed by seven years of famine, and advises storing crops. Impressed, Pharaoh makes Joseph governor of Egypt and gives him Asenath as wife.

During seven years of plenty, Joseph administers the storage system for Egypt. He and Asenath have two sons, Manasseh and Ephraim. The land prospers as grain accumulates for the looming famine.

Jacob in Canaan learns there is grain in Egypt and sends most of his sons to buy food. Joseph recognizes his brothers but accuses them of spying, imprisoning them to test their loyalty. Reuben warns that they bear divine punishment for their past betrayal.

The brothers return with Benjamin to obtain more grain, but Benjamin is framed for theft and arrested. The brothers defend him and worry for his safety as guards threaten them. Joseph continues to test their honesty and devotion.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Joseph reveals his true identity to his brothers. Benjamin eagerly embraces him, and the other brothers are stunned and ashamed. Joseph forgives them, saying that God used their evil plans for a greater good.

Joseph instructs his brothers to return home to fetch Jacob and the entire clan. He ensures their safety by bringing them to Egypt to survive the remaining five years of famine. The family settlement in Egypt begins under Joseph's protection.

The clan travels to Egypt to be reunited with Joseph. Jacob embraces his long-lost son, and the family starts a new chapter in Goshen. Joseph provides for the extended family as they settle into life in Egypt.
