In a world where classical dance is both art and lifeblood, Mangal, Keshavrao Date is a respected dance guru who stumbles upon a dazzling performance in a lavish haveli by Neela. He invites his talented son Girdhar, Gopi Krishna, to demonstrate to the audience the true method of classical dance, a moment that catches Neela’s eye and heart. Enraptured by Girdhar’s skill, Neela begs Mangal to admit her as a pupil. He agrees, but imposes two conditions: she must devote her life to art, and she must partner Girdhar in the Tandav portion of an upcoming dance competition. As they practice together, the spark between them grows into something deeper, and Neela begins to fall in love with Girdhar.
Yet danger lurks in the form of Manilal, a wealthy and jealous man who hopes to claim Neela for himself; Manilal, Madan Puri, warns Mangal that the two dancers are drifting toward romance, but Mangal refuses to heed the warning. When Mangal travels away for a time to buy new costumes for the pair, Neela and Girdhar confess their love and drift into idyllic walks and boat rides, neglecting their dancing in favor of personal happiness. Mangal returns to find his son’s dancing compromised, and, consumed by anger, disowns Girdhar and resolves to leave him.
To protect Girdhar’s career, Neela fabricates a rift by pretending she has cheated on him with Manilal, hoping to drive him away from the romance and back toward his art. The shock of this betrayal sends Neela into despair, and she contemplates drowning herself in the river, only to be saved by a kindly sadhu. Inspired by Meerabai’s example, she decides to devote her life to Krishna, but when Girdhar reappears and declares he cannot forget her, she pretends not to know him, enraging him and pulling his father into the fray once more.
Neela’s illness intensifies, and the sadhu alongside her loyal servant Bindya, Manorama, carries her to the temple where the dance competition is being held. Behind the scenes, Manilal plots to sabotage Girdhar by bribing his new partner to drop out. Undeterred, Neela takes her place in the Tandav dance, and Mangal realizes she sacrificed her own happiness to help Girdhar win. He then nudges his son to grant her a second chance. With Neela’s support, Girdhar secures the victory, and Mangal offers his blessing for the couple to marry, acknowledging that art, devotion, and love have found their rightful path.
