In early 20th-century China, a town trembles under the thumb of a ruthless triad boss known as Jade Faced Tiger, who colludes with foreign interests to seize control and exploit the locals. That night, during a lively Chinese opera performance, the stage erupts in violence as the lead performer reveals himself to be Iron Monkey Donnie Yen, a masked fighter who dedicates himself to helping the poor and punishing the wicked. Tiger’s henchmen burst onto the scene, driving Iron Monkey away and leaving the crowd in shock as the vigilante slips back into the shadows.
Jin, a young peasant traveling from the countryside, arrives in town with hopes of finding his father, the blind elder who sings on an erhu and is tied to the town’s fragile peace. Along the way he meets Xiaochun and Xiaoqian, two orphans who survive by duping others. They quickly size up Jin’s martial talent and craft a plan: they’ll help him locate his father if he pretends to be Iron Monkey. The naive Jin agrees to the ruse, entangling himself in a dangerous game that intertwines with a wealthy girl’s desire to avenge her father—an offer that pulls him deeper into Tiger’s orbit.
That same night, Iron Monkey targets a truck loaded with firearms that Tiger has acquired. Jin and the two orphans intervene, and Jin proclaims he is Iron Monkey, sparking a fierce confrontation between the two “monkeys.” The would‑be impostor and the real hero clash, but the fight is interrupted when Tiger’s men arrive. The trio escapes, yet Jin’s father, who has been near the scene, is seized by Tiger’s crew, intensifying the personal stakes for Jin and the town’s fragile balance of power.
The two orphans later sell the seized firearms to Tiger, who hires them to work at his nightclub, only to part ways after a troubling incident. Iron Monkey, ever strategic, adopts a ruse of his own, posing as another triad boss to pressure Tiger into releasing Jin’s father. Tiger is unsuspecting and nearly succeeds in letting the old man leave, until a survivor from the truck raid recognizes Iron Monkey and triggers a brutal showdown. Jin’s father is fatally shot in the crossfire as Iron Monkey makes a narrow escape.
With the truth now out, Iron Monkey reveals his true identity to Jin and explains what happened to Jin’s father. Tiger, swelling with pride and fear, brings in his formidable brother Bear [Billy Chow Bei-Lei] to seal Iron Monkey’s fate. The town’s criminals intensify their siege as Jin, Xiaochun, and Xiaoqian hatch another plan to steal back the firearms from Tiger’s grip. They are discovered at Tiger’s hidden lair, and Iron Monkey arrives to shield them, though Xiaoqian is fatally wounded and dies in Xiaochun’s arms, a devastating reminder of the cost of the street war.
In a daring night raid, Jin and Xiaochun, disguised as painters, slip into Tiger’s nightclub to reclaim the firearms. They fight their way through Tiger’s guards, and Iron Monkey arrives to even the odds, helping Jin hold his ground against Bear. The fight crescendos as Bear falls to Iron Monkey’s prowess, and Tiger himself tries to purge the threat by ensnaring the trio in a deadly net. Xiaochun, fueled by a mix of vengeance and resolve, sets Tiger ablaze, sealing his doom. The climactic net entrapment and fiery ending leave Tiger dead and the trio walking away together, a fragile sense of justice restored and a town’s future left to the mercy of those who chose to do right.
