Buffalo, Conan Lee, travels from Los Angeles to Hong Kong, where his uncle Captain Lam Yick-lin, Danny Lee, is tasked by his sister with finding her American-born nephew a suitable Chinese wife. The film follows their uneasy collaboration as they dive into a tangled case that begins with a murder on a boat owned by a notorious cocaine dealer, Fai. Although they respond to Sweet Dream’s report of the crime, they cannot find a body, which has already disappeared into the sea.
Sweet Dream, [Ellen Chan Nga-Lun], becomes a focal point in the investigation because she comes into possession of a valuable ring that the dead man used as identification in drug deals. Believing the ring could unlock important clues, she asks Buffalo for protection and invites him to stay at her apartment with her roommate Meng, [Margaret Lee], hoping to gain his help and safety. The arrangement is precarious from the start, as danger looms and loyalties blur.
A killer infiltrates the apartment and makes a fatal strike at Sweet Dream, only to fall from a balcony when the struggle ends. Meng, seeking help from outside, turns to two men who prove to be Fai’s enforcers; they kill Meng in cold blood, leaving Buffalo shaken and skeptical about Sweet Dream’s story. Despite his doubts, Buffalo chooses to shield the woman he has come to know and relocates her to stay with his uncle, the seasoned captain who is determined to maintain order amid growing lawlessness.
The danger escalates as Fai’s men press their pursuit of Sweet Dream, making another attempt on her life. Lam and Buffalo act in concert to thwart the threat, and Sweet Dream’s safety becomes a shared mission for them all. The tension peaks when Sweet Dream swallows the ring, a move that pulls the criminals deeper into a dangerous web and forces Fai’s crew to hurry her to a warehouse for a planned cocaine deal.
In a tense confrontation at the warehouse, Buffalo and Lam intervene once again, fighting off attackers and ensuring that the criminals are held for arrest by a police unit that arrives at the right moment. The chaotic skirmish culminates with Lam taking a bullet from one of the dealers, a wound that would have been fatal if not for a bulletproof vest Buffalo provided beforehand. The protective gear proves its worth, underscoring the uneasy alliance between Buffalo and Lam as they navigate a city where trust is scarce and danger is constant.
Across the perilous case, the trio—Buffalo, Captain Lam Yick-lin, and Sweet Dream—grapple with fear, loyalty, and the stark realities of crime and survival. The story unfolds with a steady mix of street-level action and procedural investigation, painting a vivid portrait of a Hong Kong rife with danger yet buoyed by stubborn courage and the unyielding bond formed under pressure. The resolution brings a hard-won sense of justice, as the criminals are restrained and the protagonists' partnership survives the ordeal, strengthened by shared experience and a renewed commitment to protecting the vulnerable in a city that never sleeps.
