In a Better World

Anton is a Swedish doctor who commutes between his home in Denmark and work at a Sudanese refugee camp. He and his wife Marianne are separated and considering divorce because of his affair. They have two sons, including Elias.

Christian has just moved from London to Denmark with his father Claus. His mother recently died of cancer, and Christian blames his father for lying about her prognosis. He becomes the new boy at Elias's school.

Elias is bullied at school until Christian comes to his defense. Christian assaults the main bully and threatens him with a knife. He then gives Elias the knife, and the two boys lie to the police and their parents about the incident.

At the playground, Anton separates his younger son from another child. The father of the other child, a mechanic, slaps Anton and insults his nationality, escalating the confrontation.

Later, Anton goes to the mechanic's workshop with his children and Christian to discuss the incident. The mechanic insults Anton's nationality and slaps him several more times, but Anton does not flinch.

In Sudan, the psychopathic warlord comes to Anton's hospital for treatment of a wounded leg. Anton treats him under strict conditions, allowing no weapons and only two guards inside the hospital.

The warlord's leg heals slowly and he shows contempt for a victim. Anton drags him away from the clinic, allowing him to be beaten to death by local people.

In Denmark, Christian and Elias decide to make a bomb to destroy the mechanic's car, planning it for Sunday morning so no passers-by are hurt.

With the fuse burning, two joggers approach. Elias leaves his protected position to warn them and is knocked unconscious, but he saves the joggers from harm.

Christian is questioned by the police and released, with the incident treated as vandalism. He visits Elias in the hospital, but Marianne does not let him see the boy, telling him that he has killed her son.

Believing Elias is dead, Christian climbs to the roof of a silo to commit suicide. He is rescued by Anton, who intervenes and stops him from harming himself.

Christian is reconciled with his father Claus, and Anton and Marianne appear to resume their marriage as they have sex.
