Dutch music producer Lara is listening to Scala & Kolacny Brothers’ cover of Radiohead’s “Creep” at work when a routine system update forces her to restart her laptop. The update bombards her with a series of CAPTCHA tests, which she repeatedly fails despite entering the correct answers. Frustrated, she calls tech support. The voice on the other end suggests that Lara can’t get through because she is a robot and tells her that she would not have to find out this way.
be the first to find out this way
The voice hangs up after refusing to assist. Lara endures more tests and is redirected to a final series of questions about her feelings of outsider status and the wealth of her partner. When she mentions that her parents died in an accident before she could remember them, the test implies they probably never existed. After completing the test, the system proclaims that there is an 87% chance she is a robot and warmly welcomes her to the so‑called “bot community.” Disturbed, she leaves her desk.
Lara videocalls her boyfriend Daniël and shares the startling result, but he awkwardly makes an excuse and ends the call. Later, during a work meeting about affirmative action, she finds it hard to focus, endlessly trying to contact Daniël.
Daniël visits her at work accompanied by a woman who introduces herself as Pam. Pam reveals that Lara is indeed a robot and had been chosen by Daniël five years earlier to be his girlfriend. Daniël tries to reassure Lara that she still has emotions and autonomy, but she feels used and heads toward the roof of a nearby multi‑storey car park.
Daniël goes after her and pleads with her not to end their relationship. He confesses that the only thing setting Lara apart from a human is that she is programmed to die shortly after he does, since he would rather not mourn her again, but he adds that she still has the freedom to leave him. Lara questions him about his deceased girlfriend Olivia and wonders what might happen if she attempted suicide. Pam reappears and asserts that Lara is incapable of ending her life if Daniël doesn’t want her to. Desperate, Lara jumps from the roof. She bleeds out on impact, but quickly regains consciousness. Credits roll as the cover of “Creep” returns.
