Arthur Bretnik, portrayed by Aaron Eckhart, is a conspiracy theorist grappling with his mental health after a tragic car accident claims the lives of his loved ones. Once a detective, he had delved into the strange case of a body found with an explosive anomaly, which later vanished from the morgue. Alongside his buddy, Jimmy Cleats, he hosts a podcast analyzing various conspiracy theories that captivate their listeners.

Their lives take a sharp turn when a distressed mother, Elena Guzman, reaches out to Bretnik, suspecting foul play in the death of her daughter, Zoe, in the quaint town of Wander, New Mexico. Bretnik arrives to uncover the truth but finds himself embroiled in a web of paranoia, suspecting that he is being shadowed. His instincts take a darker twist when he recalls the trauma of losing his own daughter, believing both tragedies might be linked by a deeper conspiracy.

Things escalate when he witnesses a suspicious old Jeep Cherokee maneuvering in a way that compels him to follow. Inside that vehicle, he discovers a woman’s body, leading him to an underground lair filled with trapped individuals implanted with microchips—a revelation that sends shockwaves through his investigation. To dispose of the body amid the rising tension, Bretnik and Cleats make a desperate decision to bury her remains in the desert. Meanwhile, Bretnik’s lawyer, Shelley Luscomb, begins to piece together his whereabouts.

As they forge ahead, Bretnik and Cleats infiltrate the underground facility, where they escape but are soon apprehended by FBI agent Nick Cassidy. In a dramatic encounter, Bretnik avenges his family’s death by shooting Canton multiple times after a bloody confrontation orchestrated by Elsa, who assures him to erase any evidence before they make their escape. However, this moment of clarity slips away as he is detained by Agent Cassidy, who reveals unsettling truths about his mental health, claiming that the scenes he witnessed were mere figments of his fractured psyche.

As Bretnik faces the chilling reality of being placed in a mental institution, he battles with his own sanity, only to be confronted by Elsa and the seemingly unscathed Cleats, who disclose that Bretnik was merely a pawn in their elaborate scheme to eliminate lingering threats. In a haunting twist of fate, he discovers he too has been implanted with a microchip. Despite the torment he endured, an envelope he mailed earlier, containing the crucial evidence against the conspiracy, finds its way to Shelly, potentially holding the key to exposing the nefarious truths he sought to unveil.
