In the post-apocalyptic year 2044, humanity has been genetically engineered to live in a constant state of happiness, but this blissful equilibrium comes with a cruel price: sorrow is erased, and once-silent numbness prevails. The result is a world where genuine feeling is rare, and pain becomes the only catalyst that can remind people they are alive. Jack, Peter Scanavino, a young man who once trained as a neurosurgeon, now makes his living as a dealer of pain-inducing substances. His routine existence is upended when a stranger arrives at his door and leaves behind a single video tape. The tape carries the unmistakable imprint of his long-lost father, Ed Alexander Crowley, Jason Robards III, and—more importantly—the first piece of a larger puzzle. Ed’s life and his obsession with something he calls the “Grand Conspiracy” unfold across a sequence of ten tapes, each one a fragment of a larger history that might illuminate what happened to the world Jack inhabits.

Motivated by the promise of truth, Jack sets out to track down the remaining nine tapes. The quest is sown with uncertainty: clues drift through memory and misdirection, and every discovery raises new questions about the nature of reality itself.
