Sandro Panseri portrays Domenico Cantoni, a young man who sacrifices the latter part of his schooling because his family has chosen his younger brother to pursue higher studies. He moves to the big city in search of a stable future and signs on at a large corporation, where a demanding sequence of exams, physical tests, and interviews marks the start of his path. The process is rigorous, yet it offers a window into the rhythms of office life, where every test and interview feels like a small test of character.

During a brief respite from the grind, he meets Loredana Detto as Antonietta Masetti, a young woman who has also left school to earn money for her mother. They share a coffee at a local cafe and speak softly about their ambitions and the quiet pressures they carry. A gentle attraction grows, but fate quickly separates them when they land in different departments within the company.

A superior informs Domenico that, despite passing the tests, there are no clerical positions available, so he agrees to take a job as a messenger. He is instructed by Sartori, who works near the accountants’ office. He searches for Antonietta and catches sight of her leaving the building with two other young men; he does not approach her at first, but their paths cross again in the day-to-day tasks of the office.

Antonietta invites him to a New Year’s Eve party organized for the workers, and he decides to attend later in the evening. When he arrives, he finds Antonietta missing, and he sits with an older couple, watching others dance and celebrate. He finds himself drawn into the moment, eventually joining a simple, free-form dance in which all the guests participate, a small act of shared joy in a secluded corner of the factory floor.

Back at the desk, Domenico receives the offer of Portioli’s vacated position in the accountants’ department, but the office’s rank dynamics complicate his place. The older staff move up first, and he ends up at a dimly lit desk in the last row, surrounded by the hum of calculations and the quiet bustle of coworkers. The turn of events underscores how quickly the office world reshapes itself and how a young man’s early hopes must adapt to a working environment that is less romantic than his earlier dreams.
