In the ruined streets of post‑war Catalonia, children gather in informal circles, weaving aventis—stories that drift between memory, rumor, comic‑book heroics and whispered fantasy. The neighborhood becomes a living tapestry where the scars of the Civil War mingle with the restless imagination of its youngest inhabitants, creating a tone that is both haunted and tender, lyrical yet grounded in the everyday grit of a city trying to rebuild.

Decades later the same streets echo the same restless curiosity. In the early 1970s, Nito, a medical examiner’s assistant, and Sor Paulina, a nurse‑nun, reunite as adult professionals. Their shared childhood bond is tinged with the same mix of fact and fable that colored their youthful games, and together they become the custodians of a collective memory that refuses to stay buried. When an unexpected discovery draws them back into the heart of the aventis, they find themselves navigating a labyrinth of half‑remembered tales that still pulse through the neighbourhood.

At the centre of those tales is Daniel Javaloyes—known simply as Java—a charismatic figure whose legend has shaped the children’s stories for years. Java embodies the restless yearning, the moral ambiguity and the mythic quality that pervade the community’s oral history, serving as a focal point for the intertwining lives and hopes of those who grew up amidst the rubble.
