At the age of 13, Maddie Young loses her hearing due to a severe case of bacterial meningitis. This life-altering event forces her to adapt her communication methods, relying on American Sign Language (ASL) to connect with the world around her.

As an adult, Maddie chooses to live in seclusion in a remote woodland home, finding solace in her writing. Her solitary existence allows her to focus deeply on her craft, though it limits her social interactions.

Despite her isolation, Maddie maintains relationships with her sister Max and her friend Sarah through video calls. These interactions, filled with laughter and support, provide essential emotional connection and grounding for Maddie.
