House of Traps

Prince Zhao is a corrupt figure who crafts a plan to revolt and take revenge on his uncle, the emperor Emperor Zhao Kuang Yin. To solidify his treachery, he gathers a roster of conspirators who pledge their loyalty to the cause and quietly places the entire list in the infamous House of Traps, a vault built to safeguard the realm’s most valuable items from bandits, rivals, and enemies alike. The House of Traps is more than a storage space—it is a labyrinth of hazards, with layered redundancies and clever mechanisms that even seasoned martial artists would struggle to navigate. The system is designed so that anyone who seeks access to the treasures on top must first deactivate the traps from outside the house using a special key; once activated, the intruder is either guided to a storage area or pulled toward the retrieval point, all while a vigilant security network watches for unauthorized entry. It is, in effect, a one-way passage for anyone who breaches the sanctum.

As the revolt looms, several conspirators bring items stolen from the emperor to the House of Traps, and these prized objects eventually become part of the vault’s hoard. Sensing the danger, the emperor dispatches an envoy, inspector Yan, to uncover the plot. Yan’s mission includes placing one of the emperor’s own “stolen” items inside the House of Traps as a test of its security. Along the way, he faces multiple assassination attempts, each thwarted by a skilled martial artist who belongs to the emperor’s loyal group—the Five Rats. The Five Rats—Bai Yu Tang (the Rat), Jiang Ping (the River Rat), Xu Qing, Deng Che, and Zhi Hua (the Black Fox)—accompany and protect Yan as he travels and works to uncover the conspiracy.

Tragedy strikes when one of the Five Rats is killed while attempting to obtain the critical list from the House of Traps. This loss spurs the remaining four brothers to intensify their efforts, vowing to avenge their fallen ally and to foil the prince’s plot against the emperor. In the days leading up to Prince Zhao’s birthday, the surviving Rats slip into Zhao’s residence undercover—posing as workers, acrobats, and other disguises. Their mission is twofold: to cripple the intricate trap system so it can be safely navigated, and to disrupt the conspirators’ plans before the emperor’s authority is toppled. The tension escalates as the infiltrators weave through feints, betrayals, and near-misses, all while racing the clock to prevent the collapse of the imperial order.

With their resources and resolve, the Five Rats orchestrate a bold gambit that culminates in a climactic clash—an intense showdown between the prince and his accomplices and the remaining, branded heroes loyal to the emperor. The House of Traps becomes a crucible where wit, bravery, and mastery are tested to their limits, and where the fate of the empire hangs in the balance. The action is driven by careful planning, high-stakes stealth, and spectacular martial displays, all set within a web of loyalties, secrets, and a relentless pursuit of justice.
