What Happens in Hantu Jeruk Purut: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Hantu Jeruk Purut (2006) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Anna, Renny Umari, a mystery writer, travels to Jeruk Purut Cemetery to probe the legend of the headless pastor. From the moment she starts writing, the ghostly presence clings to her, haunting her notes and threatening her safety. Fearing for her life, she entrusts her manuscript to her devoted fan, Airin, Angie Virgin, a bright high school student chasing fame.

Not long after, Anna is killed, pushing the danger onto Airin’s world. Airin sees Anna's writing as a shortcut to literary stardom and, along with her friends Nadine, Sheila Marcia, and Valen, Samuel Zylgwyn Heckenbücker, returns to Jeruk Purut to uncover the truth behind the haunting. After circling the cemetery seven times, a ritual some say summons the ghost, they head home.

Soon Airin is visited by the ghost, who warns that continuing to write about him will bring suffering to her and her loved ones. Despite the ominous message, Airin chooses to persist in writing.

Airin's mother and friends begin experiencing accidents. Nadine, Sheila Marcia, is knocked unconscious by an exploding gas cylinder, while Valen, Samuel Zylgwyn Heckenbücker is chased by a kuntilanak named Lasmi. Lasmi, Ernawati, pursues them toward danger. Valen escapes by colliding with electric wires. Later, as Airin pays respects to Valen in the hospital with Nadine and Cessa, Valia Rahma, Nadine becomes possessed by the ghost and tries to strangle Airin. Airin escapes and runs into the morgue, with the possessed Nadine close behind.

Cessa intervenes and stabs Nadine in the chest just before she can kill Airin, killing Nadine but leaving the ghost alive and dangerous.

Airin eventually uncovers the truth: years earlier, a young man attempted to rape Lasmi, the servant of a pastor; when the pastor tried to stop him, the man killed both him and Lasmi. The killer then donned the pastor's clothes to fool the locals but was eventually caught and decapitated, becoming a ghost bound to the past.

Q1

Why did Anna die after researching the headless pastor?

Anna died because she began writing about the headless pastor's legend at Jeruk Purut Cemetery. From the moment she started documenting the legend, the ghost attached itself to her, haunting her notes and threatening her safety. The ghost punished her for uncovering and attempting to monetize its tragic history through her writing.

Foreshadowing: Anna's fate foreshadows the same danger that laterbefalls Airin when she continues Anna's work.

  • anna death
  • headless pastor
  • writer killed
  • haunting
  • jeruk purut legend
Q2

Why did Airin continue writing about the ghost despite the warning?

Airin continued because she saw Anna's unfinished manuscript as her shortcut to literary fame. As an aspiring novelist, she believed the mysterious story would make her famous. Even after the ghost explicitly warned that continuing would bring suffering to her and her loved ones, Airin chose her ambition over safety.

Foreshadowing: This choice directly leads to the chain of accidents and tragedies that strike her friends and family.

  • airin ambition
  • ghost warning
  • writing ambition
  • fame
  • defied warning
Q3

What is the backstory of the pastor and Lasmi's deaths?

Years before the main story, a young man attempted to rape Lasmi, who was the servant of a local pastor. When the pastor tried to stop the attack, the man killed both the pastor and Lasmi. To hide his crime, the killer wore the pastor's clothes and pretended to be him, but he was eventually caught and decapitated. Both the pastor and the killer became ghosts, with the decapitated killer becoming the headless spirit that haunts the cemetery.

Foreshadowing: This tragic backstory explains why the ghost is so vengeful toward anyone who investigates or writes about the legend.

  • pastor murder
  • lasmi kuntilanak
  • killer backstory
  • decapitation
  • origin story
Q4

Why did Airin's friends and mother start having accidents?

The accidents occurred because the ghost was punishing Airin for continuing to write about it. The ghost had warned that if she persisted, her loved ones would suffer. Nadine was knocked unconscious by an exploding gas cylinder, while Valen was chased by the kuntilanak Lasmi and electrocuted. These were not random accidents but supernatural retribution for Airin's defiance.

  • nadine injury
  • valen electrocuted
  • punishment

Q5

At the hospital, Nadine became possessed by the ghost and attacked Airin, trying to strangle her. Airin fled into the morgue with the possessed Nadine chasing her. When Cessa arrived, she stabbed Nadine in the chest to stop her from killing Airin, which killed Nadine but did not destroy the ghost, which continued to threaten Airin.

Q6

Who is the ghost haunting Jeruk Purut Cemetery?

The ghost is the decapitated killer who murdered both the pastor and his servant Lasmi years earlier. After killing them, he wore the pastor's clothes to fool the locals, but was eventually caught and decapitated for his crimes. He became a vengeful spirit bound to the cemetery, punishing anyone who investigates or profits from the tragic story.

  • ghost identity
  • decapitated killer
  • pastor clothes

  • spirit origin
Q7

What happens when you circle Jeruk Purut Cemetery seven times?

According to the legend, circling the cemetery seven times summons the ghost. Airin and her friends performed this ritual hoping to encounter the spirit for their investigation. After completing the seven circles, they headed home, but the ritual triggered the chain of supernatural events that followed, including the ghost's warning and subsequent attacks.

  • cemetery ritual

Q8

Why does the ghost punish people who investigate the cemetery?

The ghost's motive is punishment for those who uncover or attempt to profit from its gruesome past. The ghost is vengeful because its violent death and the tragic story of the pastor and Lasmi became the subject of legends and curiosity. Anyone who writes about or investigates the legend - like Anna and later Airin - is seen as exploiting its tragedy and is therefore targeted.

Foreshadowing: This motive explains why the ghost specifically targets writers and investigators rather than random visitors.

  • ghost motive
  • punishment
  • exploitation
  • revenge
  • vengeful spirit
Q9

What is Lasmi's role in the story and why does she chase Valen?

Lasmi was the servant of the pastor who was killed alongside him by the young man. She became a kuntilanak, a vengeful female ghost in Indonesian folklore. When Valen was chased by Lasmi, she was being used by the supernatural forces at the cemetery to terrorize the intruders. Lasmi's attack on Valen represents the ghost's coordinated effort to drive away those who dare to investigate the cemetery.

Foreshadowing: Lasmi's involvement shows the interconnected nature of the spirits at Jeruk Purut, all united in protecting the dark secret.

  • supernatural attack
Q10

Does Airin survive and what happens to her at the end?

The movie ends with the truth leaving a lasting shadow over her, implying that if she continues pursuing the story, further calamities will follow. Her final fate remains ambiguous, with the ghost still threatening her despite her newfound knowledge.

Foreshadowing: The unresolved ending suggests that knowing the truth does not provide protection and that persistence in telling the story invites ongoing danger.
