In 1928 England, Professor David Ash pursues a career in parapsychology to debunk ghosts. He is haunted by the death of his twin sister Juliet when they were children, a tragedy he blames himself for. This guilt drives him to treat the supernatural as a strictly scientific puzzle, no matter how personal the losses remain.

David attends a séance and exposes the medium's tricks, revealing hidden accomplices. Yet a voice that sounds like Juliet calls his name, chilling him and blurring the line between fraud and phenomenon. The encounter foreshadows that some hauntings may be real.

David receives urgent entreaties from Miss Webb claiming to be tormented by ghosts, prompting a trek to Sussex to investigate. The summons forces him to leave Oxford and confront a case that will pull him into a web of family secrets. The case sets the stage for a confrontation between science and the supernatural.

Christina reveals that Miss Webb is really their nanny Tess, and that the Mariell siblings—Christina, Robert, and Simon—orchestrated the plot. David travels to the palatial Edbrook House in Sussex with Tess, drawn into the siblings' orbit. The revelation marks a turning point in his understanding of the haunting.

David decides to depart with Christina, but she refuses to leave with him. They share a kiss and make love in Christina's room, blurring the lines between witness and participant in the haunting. In the morning, the wind sweeps through a house now cloaked in drapes and fallen leaves.

David wakes to a wind-swept morning and follows Juliet's ghost to a cemetery. A tombstone reveals that Robert, Christina, and Simon Mariell died in a fire at Edbrook House in 1923. The revelation reframes the hauntings as a historical tragedy rather than mere illusion.

David seeks out Dr. Doyle, the family physician, only to be told by Juliet's ghost that Doyle had died years earlier. The encounter deepens the sense that the hauntings blur the boundaries between the living and the dead. The truth becomes an ominous clue rather than reassurance.

On the drive back to the house, David sees Juliet in the road and swerves to avoid her. The car crashes into a tree and explodes, killing Christina; David escapes and returns to Edbrook. The tragedy intensifies the family’s ruin and David's trauma.

Back at Edbrook, Nanny Tess confirms that the Mariell siblings are dead and that their ghosts will not let David and Tess go. The siblings appear and force Tess to confess to their murder, having locked them in a bedroom before setting the house on fire. The spectral family tightens its grip on the living.

The Mariell siblings turn their torments onto Tess, killing her as the mansion burns. David becomes their new target, and Juliet's ghost again intervenes to guide him. Juliet rescues David from the flames and absolves him of guilt for Juliet's death.

David escapes the blaze and is led by Juliet to safety as the mansion collapses. Juliet explains that David's guilt is dissolved and departs with him toward the afterlife. The haunting culminates in a spectral absolution and an uneasy calm.

David returns home and is greeted by his assistant Kate at the train platform. Behind them, Christina steps from the shadows and follows them into the fog, suggesting the haunting may endure in some form. The final image leaves Christina's presence lingering as the story closes.
