Gulaab Gang

Across the dusty heartland of Bundelkhand, spanning Uttar Pradesh and nearby Madhya Pradesh, a bold band of women becomes a force for justice. They are the Gulaab Gang, a group of activists and vigilantes who wear bright pink sarees as a symbol of defiance. At their helm is Rajjo, Madhuri Dixit, a fearless leader who envisions a world where girls can study and women can live free from fear. In Madhopur, the gang runs a sanctuary where she teaches little girls their alphabet and trains older girls to wield a Lathi, turning education into a shield and a spark for change. The group operates as a community of sisters, turning every small victory into a step toward something larger.

Rajjo’s inner circle includes Mahi, Divya Jagdale, Kajri, Tannishtha Chatterjee, and Sandhya, Priyanka Bose. Together they stand up for the meek and the downtrodden, confronting abusive husbands, unyielding cops, and opportunistic politicians who would rather keep people silenced than listen to their needs. Their work is practical and relentless: they intervene in domestic disputes, confront corrupt officials, and defend villagers whose voices have long been muted.

Their first major clash with power centers on a local Collector who asks for a bribe of Rs 50,000 just to connect electricity to a village. When a villager who spoke out against the abuse is beaten, the Gulaab Gang encircles the Collector’s office, blocks exits, and cuts off water flow until the power is finally connected. The tension thickens as Kajri’s husband, Sarju, presents a different kind of threat, underscoring the personal costs that come with standing up to entrenched figures of authority.

Rajjo then enters formal politics, facing off against Sumitra Devi, a calculating and influential politician who wields power like a seasoned strategist. Sumitra uses people for her own gain, and the clash grows more intense after a local MLA’s son sexually assaults a girl from Rajjo’s village. When Rajjo initially considers aligning with the MLA for advancement, she quickly pivots toward a path of independent leadership. The confrontation exposes the limits of established power and the strength of grassroots organizing.

The trajectory of the village’s struggle intensifies as Rajjo challenges the corruption that bolsters the status quo. A brutal attempt to silence dissent—where the MLA’s circle tries to pressure the father and Rajjo not to report the crime—pushes Rajjo to take dramatic action. The brink of violence is further tested when she abducts the MLA’s son in retaliation, a move that reverberates through the political landscape and signals that the fight will not be contained by official channels alone.

Sumitra, recognizing Rajjo’s growing appeal, contemplates co-opting the movement. She offers a path that would grant land for a school and ensure safety for children in a mid-day meal program if the project would bear her name. Rajjo, however, rejects the seductive bargain and presses ahead with a grass-roots campaign, choosing to demonstrate that real change comes from the people rather than the ballot-box theatrics of political theater.

The campaign is not without tragedy. Mahi is poisoned and killed by a lover who has sold himself to Sumitra’s side, a blow that sparks grief and resolve within the group. The political war escalates as Sumitra intensifies her efforts to dismantle the Gulaab Gang, sending a squad after Rajjo when she travels to the city to solicit donations. Rajjo fights back, holding her ground against intimidation and violence.

In a climactic Holi confrontation, Sumitra’s loyalists are met with bold resistance, and a brutal battle ensues. The confrontation peaks when Sumitra herself grasps a machine gun, only to be met with equal courage from Rajjo’s forces. The clash ends with an act of retribution that leaves Sumitra with a severed hand and the authorities moving to arrest her, while Rajjo faces her own legal crosswinds for the violence that followed. The immediate political outcome is a life sentence for Sumitra and a complicated future for Rajjo, but the long-term impact is a powerful win for the village’s dream: girls’ education remains a living, breathing goal.

Yet the story does not end with political or legal punishment. Rajjo’s core dream endures and, against the odds, starts to become real. An international NGO steps in with a significant offer to fund a proper school for unprivileged girls, marking a concrete step toward the village’s future. The project gains momentum, and the school starts to take shape as a symbol of resilience, perseverance, and the belief that education can transform lives—even in the face of entrenched power.
