Karel and Božena Horák confront the painful reality of their childlessness, which stems from medical issues. This revelation deeply affects both of them as they yearn for a child.

The couple decides to take a vacation in a peaceful countryside house alongside their neighbors, the Stadlers. This getaway offers them a brief respite from their emotional struggles.

Inspired by a suggestion from Mr. Stadler, Karel takes the bold step to purchase the countryside property. This decision marks a new chapter for both Karel and Božena as they seek to establish roots.

During the renovations, Karel uncovers a distinctive tree stump that strangely resembles a baby. He cleans it and surprises Božena by presenting it as a gift, igniting her imagination.

Božena becomes enchanted by the tree stump, deciding to name it Otík, and begins to nurture it as if it were her own child. This act represents her deep desire for motherhood.

Driven by desperation, Božena devises a plan to feign her pregnancy. Her scheme escalates as she prepares to 'give birth' to Otík a month earlier than anticipated.

To everyone's bewilderment, Otík springs to life with a monstrous appetite after Božena's elaborate ruse. This sudden development drastically alters the family dynamic, resulting in chaos.

Alžbětka, the Stadlers’ daughter, grows increasingly suspicious about the peculiar happenings surrounding Otík. Her curiosity leads her to unearth the secrets that lay beneath the family's façade.

The creature's insatiable appetite becomes evident as it consumes bizarre objects, including Božena's hair and eventually their pet cat. This dangerous situation begins to create rifts among the family.

Conflicted, Karel and Božena face escalating tensions as Karel pushes for Otík's elimination while Božena defends their creation as if it were her own child. Their relationship reaches a breaking point.

Otík's monstrous cravings lead to tragic consequences as it devours a postal worker and later a social worker. This gruesome turn of events forces Karel to confront the reality of what they've unleashed.

In a state of panic, Karel confines Otík in the basement, leaving it to starve. However, Alžbětka intervenes, attempting to feed the creature with regular human food despite the impending danger.

Faced with dwindling options, Alžbětka resorts to a chilling method of drawing straws to select a victim for Otík. This dark moment highlights her desperation to care for the creature.

The drawing's unfortunate conclusion leads Alžbětka to lure an old man, Mr. Žlábek, into the basement where Otík ensnares him with its vines and devours him. This horrific act marks a turning point in their moral downfall.

Karel attempts to confront Otík with a chainsaw but falters, deciding against the act when he calls the creature 'son'. Subsequently, Božena ventures into the basement, only to be heard screaming as she meets a similar fate.
