In a quiet Czech village, a pair of middle‑aged homeowners confront the ache of an empty nest. Karel Horák and his wife Božena Horáková have spent years watching friends raise children while their own dreams of parenthood remain unfulfilled. Their modest countryside home, nestled among whispering woods and weathered cottages, feels both intimate and oddly detached—an ideal backdrop for a story that balances the everyday with the uncanny.

During a routine renovation, the couple discovers a strange, sap‑laden stump that bears an uncanny resemblance to a newborn. Captivated, Božena begins to treat the odd object as a long‑awaited child, christening it Otík and nurturing it with the tenderness she has always yearned to give. Karel, while initially amused, grows wary of the stump’s odd vitality, setting the stage for a subtle clash of hope and doubt that tinges the household with a darkly comic tension.
