What Happens in Gaman: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Gaman (1978) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Ghulam Hasan, Farooq Shaikh, hails from Kotwara, Kheri, a small town in Uttar Pradesh, and travels to Bombay in search of a better life, spurred on by his close friend Lalulal Tiwari, Jalal Agha. He leaves behind his ailing mother, Sulabha Deshpande, and his wife Khairun, Smita Patil. Lalulal helps him land a job cleaning taxis, and Ghulam quickly learns the ropes to drive on his own. He works hard at the wheel, but the money the job yields comes in small, steady drips, never enough to visit Kotwara or ease the burdens waiting back home.

Lalulal, too, faces his own set of challenges in the city. Though he has settled in Bombay for years, he struggles to secure a decent place to live and endures a cramped, dilapidated shanty that the Bombay Municipal Corporation plans to demolish. Having a sweetheart, Yashodhara, Gita Siddharth, he clings to a fragile dream of stability. Yet the realities of poverty press hard, and Yashodhara’s family pressures her to leave Lalulal and go to Dubai for work to support them, rather than marrying him.

The tensions escalate into tragedy when Yashodhara’s family murders both Lalulal and Yashodhara, a brutal turn that shatters the fragile networks of hope that kept Ghulam tethered to the city. The loss strikes deep, sharpening Ghulam’s longing to return to Kotwara, even as duty and inertia pull him away from home. Before he can decide, the rhythm of Bombay—its noise, its traffic, its endless striving—drags him onward, and the story closes with him still behind the wheel, driving through the city often called the city of dreams.
