Fenton Meiks, portrayed by Matthew McConaughey, steps into an FBI office late one night, claiming to have critical information about a serial killer known as the God’s Hands Killer. This enigmatic killer, as Fenton reveals, is none other than his deceased brother, Adam. When Agent Wesley Doyle, played by Powers Boothe, arrives, skepticism looms large as he listens to Fenton’s unsettling revelations. Fenton chillingly admits to stealing Adam’s body and an ambulance, intending to fulfill a promise to bury him in a “rose garden.” To validate his story, Doyle contacts a sheriff’s office from a small town, confirming Fenton’s claims. However, Fenton deflects many of Doyle’s inquiries about how he knows Adam is the killer and instead delves into a deeply woven narrative about his family’s dark history.

The story unfolds in a modest household with an auto mechanic father, Bill Paxton, and his two sons, struggling to cope with the loss of their mother. Fenton, at just twelve years old, is forced to take on responsibilities like cooking and looking after his younger brother, Adam. One fateful night, their father awakens the boys to announce that he has received a divine message from God. An Angel has chosen them to be His earthly representatives, tasked with cleansing the world of demons. As events unfold, their father shows an obsessive need to collect seemingly mundane items which he believes are weapons provided by the Angel. After seeing his father’s firsthand execution of a captive woman, who he believed was a demon, Fenton’s cries of horror echo through the garden where they contemplate burying the innocent life lost.

As they continue down this harrowing path, Fenton wrestles with feelings of guilt and betrayal. Agent Doyle becomes increasingly frustrated with Fenton’s evasive storytelling. During their conversation, Fenton repeatedly offers to show Doyle the rose garden— a physical manifestation of his family’s horrific actions.
