Judith uses the camcorder gifted by her father to document her everyday life and her family in Yorkshire. She is secretly in love with Claire, a teenage girl across the street, and she films her from the bedroom window while processing her feelings. The camera becomes a lens through which she observes and preserves her family's moments.

During a trip to see their new house, Judith tries to persuade Andy not to move, fearing it will sever the life she’s documenting. She also struggles to tell him about her crush on Claire, a truth she can't voice aloud. The scene sets up a tense decision that unsettles everyone.

One night, Andy comes home covered in blood and claims that his colleague Ray has suffered a facial injury. The incident hints at both pressure over a promotion and Andy's growing instability. The family starts to fracture under the strain.

Sheila and Joe begin arguing with Andy as tensions rise around money and the future. Judith hides in the garden, and Andy tries to grab her; she screams and escapes back to her bedroom, locking the door behind her. The moment marks a turning point in the Kings’ fragile family dynamics.

Andy impulsively builds a new swimming pool, turning the house into a spectacle for an open house. A disfigured Ray shows up uninvited and nearly attacks Andy, who manages to escort him outside. Unable to afford the new dream house, the Kings hole up in their old home, resuming a fragile routine where Sheila returns to work and Joe and Judith go to school. The setting becomes intimate, and the secrets threatening to explode feel closer to the surface. The family’s stability hangs by a thread.

Andy explores the old house and discovers Sheila’s favoritism toward Joe, linked to her post-natal depression. He also finds Joe’s stash of illegal drugs, a video of Joe receiving oral sex, and Judith’s shrine to Claire. On camera, Andy admits that he was the one who hurt Ray to try and secure the promotion.

That night, a smoke alarm wakes the household and Andy locks all doors and windows as he revels in exposing the full truth to the family. Sheila and Joe issue an ultimatum—either they leave or Andy leaves—and Sheila reveals that she aborted her third pregnancy years ago. The atmosphere thickens with recriminations and fear.

The next day Judith returns from a visit with Claire and finds Andy on the edge of suicide. He chokes Judith before murdering Joe, turning the house into a crime scene. Sheila witnesses the killings and screams as Andy continues his rampage, declaring he will be reunited with his family.

After the killings, Andy grabs the camera and declares his violent mission finished, then destroys the camera so the evidence ends with him. He implies Judith is dead or unreachable, while the image on the scene shows that she is still alive on tape before the device is shattered. The fate of Judith remains unknown as the scene fades.

The film then cuts to the family on the beach together, suggesting a fragile or bittersweet ending, before Andy notices the camera and shuts it off. The image implies a quiet, ambiguous close to the family saga despite the violence.
