Leonard Borland, a New York City wrecking contractor, is married to Doris, a socialite with dreams of opera stardom. He finances her recital to the tune of $3,000, supporting her pursuit while continuing his wrecking work. The arrangement binds them together, even as underlying tensions simmer.

After hearing Doris sing, Cecil Carver, a celebrated opera star, takes an interest in Leonard's voice. She phones him at his office and invites him to her apartment, where they discover an surprising affinity. She hires him for her production, giving him the alias Logan Bennett.
