What Happens in Long Live the Mistress!: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Long Live the Mistress! (1947) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

In 1947, as China endures a turbulent civil war, a middle-class Shanghai family is tested by a web of well-meaning lies that starts to unravel their stability. Chen Sizhen, played by Jiang Tianliu, is a married woman whose small deceptions meant to help her relatives gradually threaten her marriage and finances.

Her husband, Tang Zhiyuan, played by Zhang Fa, is an ambitious yet inept bank clerk who launches a business with financial backing from his father-in-law, the family’s senior support. Sizhen does what she can to secure that funding, hoping to keep their household afloat and build a peaceful future.

Blinded by the lure of quick gains, Tang Zhiyuan falls prey to Shi Mimi, the seductress played by Shangguan Yunzhu, and begins to neglect the new venture. The neglect sets off a chain of misfortunes, as the deputy manager under his watch embezzles the remaining funds and the company teeters on bankruptcy.

Despite the infidelity, Tang Zhiyuan blames Sizhen for the collapse and pushes for a divorce. Mimi and her husband scheme to drain the rest of the money, but Sizhen proves resourceful, foiling the extortion and effectively bailing her husband out of trouble.

As a result, Tang Zhiyuan regains a hint of gratitude and contemplates canceling the divorce. Yet Sizhen decides to press ahead with the separation. At the lawyer’s office, she makes a decisive turn and recommits to the marriage, choosing to fight for their union instead of walking away—their reconciliation unfolding in a quiet moment of resolve.

The story closes on a subdued note of caution and realization as the reconciled couple share a moment at a café, where they observe Shi Mimi attempting to charm a new man, reminding them that temptation and loyalty can briefly intertwine even as they choose their path forward.

Long Live the Mistress! Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Long Live the Mistress! (1947): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why does Tang Zhiyuan blame Sizhen for the business collapse?

Zhiyuan blames Sizhen because he cannot face his own incompetence. Despite receiving financial support from his father-in-law and having Sizhen's support throughout, Zhiyuan neglected the business to pursue Mimi. When the deputy manager embezzled funds and the company went bankrupt, Zhiyuan projected his own failures onto his wife rather than accepting responsibility for his poor management and infidelity.

Foreshadowing: Early in the film, Zhiyuan is described as an ambitious but incompetent bank clerk, establishing his tendency to fail at business matters.

  • tang zhiyuan
  • chen sizhen
  • blame
  • business failure
  • responsibility
Q2

How did the company go bankrupt so quickly?

The company collapsed because Zhiyuan neglected his managerial duties while pursuing his affair with Mimi. A deputy manager under his watch took advantage of this neglect and embezzled the remaining company funds, triggering rapid financial collapse. Without proper oversight, debts mounted quickly and the venture that was meant to bring stability instead brought ruin.

Foreshadowing: The timeline notes Zhiyuan's neglect deepens as he becomes involved with Mimi, creating the opportunity for embezzlement.

  • embezzlement
  • company collapse
  • deputy manager
  • bankruptcy
  • business failure
Q3

Why does Sizhen initially agree to the divorce?

Sizhen agrees to the divorce because she feels abandoned and unappreciated. Despite her efforts to secure funding, protect the family, and fight off Mimi's extortion, Zhiyuan blamed her for his own mistakes and demanded a separation. At that moment, Sizhen decides to assert her independence and choose dignity over a marriage that has become emotionally damaging.

Foreshadowing: Sizhen's white lies throughout the story reflect her struggle to maintain harmony, but the divorce represents her final assertion of agency.

Q4

How does Sizhen stop Mimi's extortion attempt?

Sizhen proves resourceful by mounting a quiet counterstrategy that outwits Mimi and her husband. Rather than paying the demanded money, she uses the situation to prevent further drainage of their finances. Her quick thinking stabilizes their precarious financial situation and prevents the extortion from completing its course.

Foreshadowing: The timeline notes Sizhen has been managing family affairs with white lies throughout, showing her capability in difficult situations.

  • extortion
  • chen sizhen
  • counterstrategy

Q5

Why does Sizhen change her mind at the lawyer's office?

At the last moment, Sizhen chooses to recommit to the marriage rather than proceed with the divorce. This decision reflects her recognition that true renewal may come from fighting for the relationship rather than walking away. The moment represents a deliberate choice to restore the family, though it reads more as pragmatic acceptance than romantic passion.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Sizhen stays cautious of the fragile accord between them, showing she has not fully let go of hope for reconciliation.

Q6

Why does Tang Zhiyuan fall for Mimi despite knowing she is a schemer?

Zhiyuan is blinded by the lure of quick gains and the smoother path Mimi represents. Though he knows she is a gold-digging schemer, he chooses to neglect his business duties and pursue the excitement she offers. His ambition overwhelms his judgment, leading him to prioritize short-term pleasure over long-term stability.

Q7

Why does Chen Sizhen tell white lies throughout the story?

Sizhen's white lies are meant to help her relatives and maintain family harmony. However, these small deceptions gradually create misgivings and undermine trust within her marriage. Her well-intentioned fibs set in motion the chain of events that eventually threaten her marriage and finances.

Foreshadowing: The film opens with Sizhen's white lies creating tension in the middle-class Shanghai home.

Q8

What does the final café scene imply about the couple's future?

The final scene shows Sizhen and Zhiyuan celebrating their reconciliation at a café, only to spot Mimi attempting to charm a new man. This image serves as a warning that external temptations remain constant in postwar Shanghai. Their marriage is technically saved, but the cynical shadow cast by Mimi moving on to a new victim suggests the threat to their stability is never fully gone.

Sizhen works to secure this support hoping to build a stable future for their household.
