What Happens in Drushyam 2: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Drushyam 2 (2021) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

The story begins on the dark night of August 3, 2014, when a man named Janardhan witnesses Rambabu exiting an under-construction police station. At that moment, Rambabu was finalizing the burial of Varun's body to cover up a crime. As Janardhan attempts to flee and hide at his home to apologize to his wife, he is instead apprehended and arrested by the authorities.

Six years later, life has reached a state of semi-normality for Rambabu and his family, including Jyothi, Anju, and Anu. Having successfully sold some land, Rambabu has transitioned into a businessman, owning a movie theatre and venturing into film production. He is currently working on a movie with the prestigious screenwriter Vinay Chandra. However, the trauma of the past lingers; Anju suffers from PTSD and frequent seizures due to the brutal interrogation she endured from the police years prior. While the family appears successful, the local villagers, fueled by jealousy over Rambabu's wealth, spread malicious gossip, claiming that Anju had led Varun on.

Feeling isolated and emotionally distant from her family, Jyothi forms a deep, sisterly bond with her new neighbor, Saritha. Saritha works as a government clerk and is frequently subjected to abuse by her alcoholic husband, Sanjay, who works as a real estate broker.

On the anniversary of Varun's death, the grief-stricken father, Prabhakar, approaches Rambabu and begs him to surrender his son's remains so that he can perform the final rites and provide some peace to Geetha Prabhakar. Rambabu firmly refuses, which only serves to further enrage Geetha. Amidst this tension, Anu returns home for a school break and invites her friends over for a sleepover, despite Jyothi's strong objections. Because Rambabu remains aloof and indifferent to Jyothi's concerns, she seeks solace in her friendship with Saritha. During one of their confidantes, Jyothi inadvertently reveals the devastating secret: Anju was the one who killed Varun.

Unbeknownst to Jyothi, Saritha and Sanjay are not who they claim to be. They are actually undercover police officers assigned by the Inspector General of Police, IG Goutam Sahu, who is a friend of Geetha. Goutam is driven by a desire to avenge Geetha and clear the embarrassment the failed case has brought upon the police department. To ensure they catch the family, the officers had bugged the house.

Meanwhile, Janardhan is released from prison. Seeking to restore his relationship with his estranged wife and lured by the prospect of a financial reward, he contacts Goutam. With funding provided by Geetha and Prabhakar, Janardhan reveals exactly what he saw six years ago. This lead allows the authorities to excavate the floor of the police station, where they discover a skeleton. Rambabu, monitoring the situation through a network of CCTV cameras he had strategically installed around the station, realizes the net is closing in.

Goutam, Geetha, and Prabhakar summon the family for questioning. While they initially maintain their alibi, Geetha plays the recording of Jyothi's confession to Saritha, shattering their defense. In a fit of rage, Geetha probes Anju about the murder, which triggers one of Anju's seizures. Seeing his daughter in distress, a desperate Rambabu makes a false confession to Goutam, claiming that he was the one who murdered Varun. Satisfied for the moment, the police release the family, though Goutam secretly plots to trap them later.

The following day, the police formally arrest Rambabu and put him on trial. However, the tide turns when Vinay Chandra approaches Goutam, Geetha, and Prabhakar. He reveals that Rambabu had written a movie script based on the actual events and published it as a novel under Chandra's name, titled Drushyam, to secure copyright protection. In court, Rambabu pleads not guilty, arguing that the police used scenes from the book Drushyam to coerce a forced confession.

The ultimate shock comes when DNA tests reveal that the skeleton found at the station is not Varun's. Vinay Chandra explains the genius of Rambabu's alternate climax: anticipating that his first plan might be discovered, Rambabu had befriended a cemetery undertaker to procure the remains of another young man who died from similar injuries. He kept those remains for three years and later befriended a Security Guard at the local morgue. On the night Varun's body arrived at the morgue, Rambabu switched the bodies before DNA samples could be taken and secretly burned the original remains.

Due to the lack of evidence, Rambabu is released on bail, and the police are prohibited from harassing the family. The Judge privately warns Goutam to cease his pursuit, noting that unsolved cases are a common part of the system. As Rambabu exits the court, Sanjay and Saritha can only watch in disbelief.

Outside, Chandra narrates the final part of the alternate climax to Geetha and Prabhakar: the hero would discreetly deliver the ashes to the grieving parents. Simultaneously, Rambabu anonymously sends Varun's actual ashes to Geetha and Prabhakar with a message asking them to stop hounding his family. As Prabhakar finally conducts the last rites, Goutam convinces Geetha to let go of her hatred. He acknowledges that they can never win because Rambabu will do anything to protect his family. Goutam concludes that Rambabu's true punishment is the fact that he must spend the rest of his life in fear, forever prepared to evade the justice system. Rambabu, watching from a distance, solemnly departs.

Plot questions answered

Drushyam 2 Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Drushyam 2 (2021): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why did Rambabu refuse to hand over Varun's remains to Prabhakar?

Rambabu refused because giving Prabhakar Varun's actual remains would mean performing last rites on a body that was never legally identified and that Rambabu had secretly buried at the under-construction police station. Returning the real remains would also have linked him back to the burial site, exposing his role in disposing of the body. By denying the request, he protected his family's secret while deepening the conflict with Geetha, who interpreted it as cruelty rather than self-preservation.

Foreshadowing: Rambabu's calm refusal contrasts with Prabhakar's grief, hinting that the body itself is a piece of evidence Rambabu cannot afford to let surface.

  • prabhakar
  • varun remains
  • last rites
  • drushyam 2
Q2

How were Saritha and Sanjay revealed to be undercover cops?

Throughout the film, Saritha is presented as a lonely, abused neighbor who befriends Jyothi out of genuine emotional need. The twist is that she and Sanjay are plainclothes officers deployed by Inspector General Gowtham Sahu, who wanted to gather evidence on the family after the original case embarrassed the police. Their abusive marriage is a cover story, and the house had been bugged to record conversations, which is how Jyothi's confession was captured.

Foreshadowing: Small details like Sanjay's convenient presence and Saritha's unusually persistent interest in Jyothi's family life subtly hint that her concern is professional rather than personal.

  • saritha
  • sanjay
  • undercover cops
  • gowtham
  • bugged house
Q3

How did Jyothi's confession about Anju get recorded?

Saritha and Sanjay had installed a listening device in their home because they were undercover cops monitoring Rambabu's family on Gowtham's orders. When Jyothi, feeling isolated and emotionally dependent on Saritha, let slip that Anju killed Varun, the conversation was captured by the bug. The recording is later played by Geetha during the interrogation, breaking the family's alibi.

Foreshadowing: The film's earlier scenes of Saritha gently steering conversations toward the past function as quiet setup for how the confession was baited out of Jyothi.

  • jyothi confession
  • recording
  • bugged house
  • saritha
  • anju killed varun
Q4

Why did Rambabu falsely confess to murdering Varun?

After Geetha's recording destroyed the family's alibi and her questioning triggered Anju's seizures, Rambabu realized the interrogation was about to break his daughter's fragile mental state. By confessing himself, he pulled attention away from Anju and Jyothi, gave the police a win to stop the immediate pressure, and bought time to activate his long-prepared backup plan involving the published novel and the switched body.

Foreshadowing: Rambabu's earlier aloofness during Jyothi's concerns about the sleepover hints that he was already thinking several moves ahead, treating the household like a chessboard.

  • rambabu false confession
  • protects anju
  • anju seizures
  • interrogation
Q5

Why did Rambabu publish his story as a novel under Chandra's name?

Rambabu turned the events of Varun's death into a movie script and then registered it as a novel under Vinaya Chandra's name to secure copyright protection. This was a legal safeguard: if the police ever tried to claim his confession was genuine, he could prove the entire sequence of events had already been fictionalized and published. The novel essentially created a paper trail proving the 'crime' was his own intellectual property, not real evidence.

Foreshadowing: Rambabu's interest in producing a film and his collaboration with Chandra are set up early as a creative hobby, masking the fact that every scene is a rehearsed legal defense.

  • drushyam novel
  • vinaya chandra
  • copyright

Q6

How did Rambabu manage to switch Varun's body at the morgue?

According to Chandra's narration of the film's alternate climax, Rambabu had spent years preparing a backup. He befriended an undertaker at a cemetery and obtained the remains of another young man who had died in a similar way, keeping them for three years. He then befriended a security guard at the local morgue by promising him a role in his film. The night after Varun's original body arrived at the morgue but before DNA samples were collected, he swapped the two sets of remains and secretly burned Varun's body.

Foreshadowing: Rambabu's decision to produce a film and offer people cameos is recontextualized as a recruitment tool to get access to both the cemetery and the morgue.

  • body switch
  • morgue
  • undertaker
  • alternate climax
  • rambabu scheme
Q7

Why didn't the DNA test match the excavated skeleton to Varun?

The skeleton dug up from the under-construction police station was not Varun's because Rambabu had never buried Varun's actual remains there in the first place. The body placed at the site was part of his pre-prepared switch, meaning the police were excavating evidence that had been engineered to fail. When the DNA came back inconclusive, the prosecution lost its only physical proof tying Rambabu to Varun's death.

Foreshadowing: Rambabu's installation of CCTV cameras at the station shows he always treated that location as a controlled environment rather than a hidden grave.

  • dna test
  • skeleton
  • police station
  • body switch
  • evidence
Q8

What did the judge mean by telling Gowtham that unsolved cases 'are not new to the system'?

The judge's private remark is an implicit acknowledgment that high-profile cases sometimes get buried, lost, or quietly closed due to political and institutional pressure, and that Gowtham's personal vendetta against Rambabu is not unique. He is warning Gowtham to drop the pursuit, both because the evidence is now gone and because continued harassment of a family without proof reflects poorly on the force. The line also suggests the system itself is willing to look the other way when a case becomes inconvenient.

  • judge warning
  • gowtham
  • unsolved cases
  • corrupt system
  • drushyam 2 ending
Q9

Why did Rambabu send Varun's ashes to Geetha and Prabhakar anonymously?

Rambabu sent the ashes because the novel's alternate climax ends with the hero discreetly handing over the remains to the victim's parents and living with his guilt, and he wanted to follow through on that written ending in real life. The anonymous delivery also gives Geetha and Prabhakar the closure they had begged him for, while removing the last physical evidence from his possession. It is a final move that mirrors his own film's plot to the letter.

Foreshadowing: Rambabu's description of his film's final scene earlier in the movie plants the exact beat he later performs in real life.

  • varun ashes
  • anonymous
  • last rites
  • geetha
  • prabhakar
Q10

Why did Rambabu install CCTV cameras at the under-construction police station?

Rambabu installed CCTV cameras around the station so he could monitor any activity near the site where he had buried Varun's body. The cameras let him watch the excavation in real time when Janardhan's tip led the authorities there, giving him the warning he needed to activate his backup plan. It also shows that the location was never meant to be a forgotten secret; it was a managed risk he was prepared to lose.

Foreshadowing: The film shows Rambabu casually checking his phone at home, and only later reveals the phone is connected to the station's camera feed.

  • cctv cameras
  • police station
  • excavation
  • rambabu surveillance
Q11

How did the published novel defeat the police's case against Rambabu?

In court, Rambabu's defense argued that the forced confession extracted by the police was actually lifted from scenes in the novel Drushyam, which Rambabu had written and copyrighted years before his arrest. Since the exact details of the supposed crime already existed in a published work, the prosecution could not prove Rambabu was confessing from personal knowledge rather than reciting fiction. The combination of the copyrighted novel and the failed DNA test left the court with no admissible evidence.

Foreshadowing: Chandra's earlier insistence on registering the script and novel is revealed as the legal backbone of Rambabu's courtroom defense.

  • novel defense
  • courtroom
  • forced confession
  • copyright
  • rambabu trial
Q12

What happens to Rambabu at the end of Drushyam 2?

Rambabu is released on bail because the DNA evidence fails and the novel discredits his confession, and the judge privately orders Gowtham to back off. He is not declared innocent so much as untouchable, and Gowtham concludes that Rambabu's real punishment is having to live in constant fear, always prepared for the next investigation. Rambabu watches Geetha perform Varun's last rites from a distance and walks away alone, free in name but trapped by what he has done to protect his family.

Foreshadowing: Gowtham's earlier comment that 'unsolved cases are not new to the system' foreshadows the quiet, unceremonious way Rambabu slips through the legal cracks.

  • rambabu ending
  • bail
  • gowtham
  • punishment
  • drushyam 2 climax
Q13

Why did Anju have seizures during the police interrogation?

Anju suffers from PTSD and epileptic seizures as a direct result of the trauma she experienced in the first Drushyam film, when the police pressured her over Varun's death. When Geetha aggressively questioned her about the case, the stress and confrontation retriggered that trauma, causing her to collapse. The seizures are used by the film to show how Anju is the most psychologically vulnerable member of the family and why Rambabu is willing to confess to spare her.

Foreshadowing: Anju's episodes were introduced early in the sequel as lingering damage from the first film, setting up how easily she breaks under pressure.

Paranoid cat-and-mouse thrillers like Drushyam 2

Schemes, surveillance, and suffocating suspense as an ordinary family outsmarts a relentless system. Looking for movies like Drushyam 2? These tense crime thrillers pit an ordinary family against a relentless investigation, with elaborate schemes, surveillance, and high-stakes mind games. Expect gripping suspense, intricate plotting, and an oppressive atmosphere where every quiet moment feels like the calm before the next devastating twist.

  • paranoia
  • schemes
  • high-stakes
  • oppressive
  • gripping
  • Tone: tense, paranoid, suspenseful
  • Pacing: variable, with slow-burn dread and sudden escalation
Why these movies?

The story pattern: Stories in this thread typically begin with a fragile peace after a past misdeed, then explode back into motion when a new investigation, suspicious officer, or buried clue resurfaces. The protagonist, often a seemingly ordinary parent or spouse, must deploy increasingly clever deceptions, alibis, and counter-maneuvers while the opposing force (police, prosecutors, criminals) tightens the noose. Twists reveal layers within layers: stories within stories, planted evidence, betrayals from within the family, and undercover operations the audience barely sees coming. The arc usually ends not with clean victory but with a pyrrhic escape, the family surviving but permanently shadowed.

Why they belong together: These films share a relentless sense of being watched, hunted, and outmaneuvered. The mood stays tense and oppressive throughout, with pacing that breathes just enough to build dread before snapping into urgent confrontation. What unites them is the cat-and-mouse structure: a clever, morally complicated protagonist matching wits against a determined pursuer, surrounded by secrets, surveillance, and the constant threat of exposure. If you finish one wanting another pressure-cooler thriller, this thread is for you.

Heavy family dramas like Drushyam 2 where protection comes at a cost

Heavy family dramas where protecting loved ones demands moral compromise and permanent scars. If you liked Drushyam 2, these are similar movies for you. Emotional family dramas meet crime thriller stakes as a parent or spouse makes devastating choices to protect their family. Expect heavy themes of guilt, trauma, moral compromise, and bittersweet endings where love wins the battle but loses something irreplaceable in the process.

  • family protection
  • guilt
  • moral compromise
  • trauma
  • bittersweet
  • parental love
  • Tone: bittersweet, heavy, tense
  • Pacing: variable, mixing domestic stillness with thriller urgency
Why these movies?

The story pattern: The protagonist is usually a devoted family figure whose world shatters when a crisis, accident, or past crime endangers the people they love. They take control through a mix of ingenuity, sacrifice, and morally gray decisions, often becoming a stranger to the family they are trying to save. The story digs into PTSD, social ostracism, the corrosion of trust, and the quiet domestic moments that make the high-stakes plot feel painfully personal. The arc rarely ends in triumph; instead, the family emerges damaged but together, haunted by what was done in the name of love.

Why they belong together: These films are grouped because they put the family at the emotional center while crime and thriller mechanics orbit around it. The shared DNA is a protector-protecting-their-own story with heavy emotional weight, morally ambiguous choices, and a bittersweet, complex ending rather than a clean happy resolution. They tend to alternate slower domestic scenes that establish love and tension with thriller beats that test those bonds, making the viewer feel both the warmth of the family and the dread of what they are about to do.
