Sabina leads a relatively ordinary life as a dubbing actress and enjoys a stable relationship with Franco, a struggling actor. Their happiness rests on small pleasures and professional success, even as Franco's career struggles begin to shadow their days.

Franco accepts a job in a television series directed by the talented but disillusioned Andrea Negri. The project highlights rising tensions behind the scenes and foreshadows strains that may affect his relationship with Sabina.

The relocation of Sabina's parents' graves triggers a flood of childhood memories from a strict middle-class upbringing. She begins to recollect painful events that she had kept buried for years, signaling the start of a painful emotional journey.

Sabina experiences terrifying nightmares and leans on Emilia, her closest friend who is blind due to a degenerative disease. Emilia provides comfort and candid company as Sabina starts to confront her past.

Walking through the city center with Maria, Sabina learns of her friend's deep pain after the husband leaves for a younger lover. Sabina also discovers she is pregnant, but chooses not to tell Franco, keeping the news to herself for now.

Sabina travels to Charlottesville, United States, to spend Christmas with her older brother Daniele, a literature professor. There, she hopes to gain clarity and serenity by discussing their past with him.

On New Year's Eve, Franco cheats on Sabina with Anita, an actress from the series. At the same time, Daniele reveals the traumatic truth of their childhood—that their father abused them, with their mother's silent consent—and that Daniele intervened to protect Sabina by threatening their father.

Daniele's revelation strengthens the bond between him and Sabina, and he believes Sabina's coming motherhood will aid her healing. Back in Italy, Sabina's relationship with Franco grows colder as he refuses to admit his infidelity.

Sabina is delighted to see Emilia and Maria’s romance blossom after she introduced them. The shared loneliness that drew the two women together becomes a source of new companionship and hope.

During a summer visit to Negri's farmhouse, Franco works with Negri on a film project. Maria wrestles with her feelings for Emilia while Franco, suspicious of Sabina's distance, confesses his own infidelity.

Sabina suddenly disappears from the farmhouse, her advanced pregnancy and the oppressive heat heightening concerns. She later goes into labor on a deserted train, surrounded by olive trees.

At the hospital, Sabina gives birth to a baby boy and is reunited with Franco. Negri proposes including the newborn in his film project, despite a nurse's objection that only parents should handle the baby.

Back in America, Daniele vows to visit Sabina and his newborn nephew, hopeful that they will overcome their past traumas and build fulfilling lives together.
