Sabina leads a mostly ordinary life as a dubbing actress, finding quiet satisfaction in her work and in her relationship with Franco, an actor who struggles to find steady roles. The pair navigate a TV project directed by the gifted yet disillusioned Andrea Negri, and the stability of their bond is tested by quiet tensions and unspoken questions. When Sabina’s parents’ graves are moved, memories of a strict middle-class upbringing begin to surface, and she is soon plagued by disturbing nightmares. She confides in Emilia, her closest friend who is blind due to a degenerative disease, and the two of them become a quiet pillar for one another as Sabina’s inner world grows more unsettled.
During a casual walk through the city center with Maria, Sabina uncovers a painful truth about her friend: Maria has been abandoned by her husband for a twenty-year‑younger lover. Meanwhile, Sabina discovers she is pregnant but chooses not to tell Franco right away. She travels to the United States to spend Christmas with her older brother, Daniele, a literature professor who teaches at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. There, Sabina hopes that time away will provide the clarity she seeks and a chance to come to terms with the past.
In Charlottesville, Sabina opens up to Daniele about the nightmares and the childhood they endured. Daniele eventually reveals a disturbing family secret: their father abused them, with their mother’s quiet consent. He had stepped in to protect Sabina, even threatening their father with violence. Years later, Daniele arranged for their father to receive a fatal dose of morphine, a discovery that redefines their shared history and reshapes Sabina’s path forward. This revelation deepens the bond between siblings, and Daniele believes that Sabina’s impending motherhood could be a crucial step in her healing process.
Back in Italy, Sabina’s relationship with Franco cools even as she carries their child. Franco remains reluctant to admit his infidelity, and the tension between them grows heavier. Yet Sabina also finds sweetness in other connections: she learns of a blossoming romance between Emilia and Maria, two women she had introduced to one another, united by a shared loneliness that has started to lift as they lean on each other.
The couple’s strain comes to a head during a summer visit to Negri’s farmhouse, where Franco works with the director on a film project. Maria’s feelings for Emilia become more complicated, and Franco, sensing Sabina’s emotional distance, confesses his infidelity. Sabina, in turn, bares the truth of their troubled childhood, laying bare the roots of their present pains. Her sudden disappearance from the farmhouse raises alarm, especially given her advanced pregnancy and the oppressive heat.
Her labor begins unexpectedly on a deserted train among rows of olive trees, a moment that feels almost mythic in its isolation. When they reach the hospital, Franco and the group are there to meet her, and Sabina gives birth to a baby boy, a moment that reaffirms her bond with Franco even as the other relationships around her begin to heal. Negri insists on including the newborn in his film project, despite a nurse’s caution that only the parents should handle the child. The arrival of the baby marks a fragile reconciliation and a renewed sense of possibility.
Across the Atlantic, Daniele looks forward to visiting Sabina and his namesake nephew, carrying with him the hope that both siblings and their families can move beyond the shadows of their past toward lives that are more serene and fulfilling. The film’s quiet throughlines—trauma, forgiveness, and the redemptive power of new life—bind Sabina’s journey to the larger question of whether a person can ever fully be healed from what memory keeps intact.
