What Happens in Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds: Full Plot Summary

The whole story of Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds (2021) explained, from the opening scene to the final frame: every key event, every twist and what it all adds up to. Read it as a quick recap before the sequel, to check a scene you missed, or to finally understand what really happened.

Dogtanian, a spirited young swordsman, has dreams of joining the legendary Muskehounds, renowned protectors of France. His journey begins when he arrives in Paris, where he seeks an audience with Monsieur de Treville. Unfortunately, Treville tells him that, due to the wrongful accusations laid upon his father by Cardinal Richelieu, Dogtanian is deemed unfit to join their ranks.

As fate would have it, Dogtanian crosses paths with the three brave Muskehounds — Vicente Gil, Ana Esther Alborg, and Gabriel Jiménez — who challenge him to a duel. After a thrilling skirmish with Richelieu's guards, the Muskehounds commend Dogtanian for his bravery, setting the stage for his determined quest.

One fateful evening, Dogtanian heroically rescues Juliette, a lady he had previously encountered, from the clutches of Richelieu's guards. She reveals a nefarious plot: Richelieu plans to incite war between France and England to gain control over Europe. To avert this disaster, Queen Anne of Austria is preparing to send a letter to the King of England, accompanied by a valuable diamond necklace from King Louis XIII. Juliette cautions Dogtanian that if Richelieu gets his hands on the necklace, conflict is inevitable.

Recalling a conversation between Count Rochefort, Richelieu’s cunning spy, and Milady de Winter, Dogtanian realizes the gravity of the situation. The following day, in a bid to protect the necklace, Juliette warns the Muskehounds about the impending danger. That night, Dogtanian enters a palace to confront Milady and, despite his best efforts, she evades capture.

Learning that Milady is en route to Calais to board a ship, Dogtanian teams up with the Muskehounds, splitting up to catch her. Dogtanian arrives just in time at the harbor, but Milady is already setting sail. In a twist of fate, he encounters Captain Mixtolobo, a pirate captain, who joins him in pursuing Milady's vessel. A fierce duel ensues on the ship, where Dogtanian battles Milady to reclaim the diamond necklace.

After recovering the necklace, Dogtanian reconciles with the Muskehounds, and they return to Paris together. In a climactic encounter at the palace, Dogtanian confronts Rochefort about his father's framing, leading to the shocking revelation of his father's innocence. Just then, Richelieu appears, attempting to eliminate Dogtanian with a gunshot. In a moment of sacrifice, his loyal friend Pip takes the bullet, leaving Dogtanian devastated. However, he soon discovers that Pip was saved by a gold coin in his pocket.

With Milady successfully delivering the necklace to Queen Anne, Dogtanian's heroic deeds are recognized, culminating in his official induction into the ranks of the Muskehounds. As they celebrate this victory, Richelieu swears vengeance, promising that the story of Dogtanian and the Muskehounds is far from over.

Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds Plot Explained: Your Questions Answered

The questions people ask most about Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds (2021): what happens in the confusing scenes, why the characters do what they do, the twists, hidden details and what the ending means. Each answer contains spoilers.

Q1

Why is Dogtanian initially rejected by the Muskehounds?

Dogtanian is deemed unfit to join the Muskehounds because Cardinal Richelieu had previously framed his father, and that accusation still tarnishes the family name. Monsieur de Treville, who oversees the Muskehounds, cannot accept someone whose father has been branded a traitor, regardless of Dogtanian's own skills or intentions. This rejection sets up the central conflict of Dogtanian needing to prove his worth independently and later clear his father's name.

Foreshadowing: Richelieu's hostility toward the Muskehounds is hinted at from the very first meeting, since he already has a personal vendetta against Dogtanian's family.

  • dogtanian rejected
  • muskehounds
  • treville
  • father's framing
  • richelieu
Q2

What is Richelieu's plan to start a war between France and England?

Cardinal Richelieu wants to seize a valuable diamond necklace that Queen Anne of Austria intends to send to the King of England as a diplomatic gift alongside a peace letter. If Richelieu intercepts the necklace, the English king will interpret the theft as an act of aggression, breaking the fragile peace and triggering war. Controlling that conflict would give Richelieu enormous political leverage over all of Europe.

Foreshadowing: Rochefort and Milady are shown plotting in secret before Dogtanian learns the full scope of the scheme, hinting that the necklace theft is only one piece of a larger plan.

  • richelieu war plan
  • diamond necklace
  • france england
  • queen anne
  • milady theft
Q3

Why is Milady de Winter heading to Calais with the necklace?

Calais is the port from which ships depart for England, and Milady is acting on Cardinal Richelieu's orders to deliver the stolen diamond necklace across the Channel. By smuggling the necklace into England, she ensures the diplomatic gift never arrives, which would humiliate France and provoke the English crown into declaring war. Calais is simply the fastest and most direct route to complete the Cardinal's scheme.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Juliette specifically warns that if Richelieu obtains the necklace, war becomes inevitable, making Milady's escape toward England the logical next step.

  • milady calais
  • necklace stolen
  • richelieu plan
  • escape england
  • dogtanian chase
Q4

How does Dogtanian learn about Richelieu's conspiracy?

Dogtanian pieces the conspiracy together from two sources: first, Juliette explains the necklace plot and warns him of Richelieu's intentions to provoke war, and second, he recalls overhearing a conversation between Count Rochefort and Milady de Winter, which confirmed that Richelieu's agents were actively preparing to steal the necklace. Combining Juliette's warning with the overheard scheming is what convinces Dogtanian of the threat and pushes him to act.

Foreshadowing: The film shows Dogtanian noticing Rochefort and Milady talking in the palace before he fully understands what they are discussing, planting the information he later remembers.

  • dogtanian learns conspiracy
  • rochefort milady
  • juliette warning
  • overheard plot
Q5

Why do the three Muskehounds finally accept Dogtanian?

The three Muskehounds begin to respect Dogtanian after he demonstrates courage and swordsmanship during a skirmish with Richelieu's guards, defending them when they are outnumbered. His repeated acts of bravery, especially rescuing Juliette and pursuing Milady across the Channel, prove that he is loyal, capable, and willing to risk his life for France. Their acceptance reflects a merit-based brotherhood, where deeds matter more than reputation or family name.

Foreshadowing: Their first duel with Dogtanian establishes that he can hold his own against elite fighters, hinting that he belongs among them.

  • muskehounds accept dogtanian
  • prove worth
  • duel
  • brotherhood
Q6

How does Dogtanian catch up to Milady's ship at sea?

After Dogtanian arrives at Calais and sees Milady's ship already departing, he encounters Captain Mixtolobo, a pirate captain who agrees to help him pursue the vessel. Mixtolobo's faster ship allows Dogtanian to intercept Milady on the open sea, where a duel breaks out on deck and he manages to reclaim the diamond necklace. Without the pirate's help, Milady would have sailed beyond reach and the necklace would have been lost.

Foreshadowing: The film establishes early that Dogtanian is resourceful and willing to seek help from unlikely allies, setting up his partnership with the pirate captain.

  • dogtanian catches milady
  • captain mixtolobo
  • calais chase
  • ship duel
Q7

How was Dogtanian's father framed by Richelieu?

Cardinal Richelieu orchestrated false accusations against Dogtanian's father as part of his broader campaign to weaken the Muskehounds and consolidate power. The exact nature of the charges is left somewhat vague, but the framing is what made Dogtanian's family name dishonorable and initially disqualified him from joining the corps. Richelieu uses the false accusation as both a personal attack and a political tool to keep loyal enemies of the crown out of the Royal Guard.

Foreshadowing: Treville's initial rejection of Dogtanian hints that his father's disgrace is a deliberate obstacle planted by Richelieu, not an honest verdict.

  • dogtanian father framed
  • richelieu accusation
  • family disgrace
Q8

Why does Rochefort finally admit Dogtanian's father is innocent?

Rochefort confesses the truth because Dogtanian corners him in the palace and demands an explanation for the original accusation. With the Muskehounds closing in and his broader plot unraveling after the necklace is recovered, Rochefort has little reason to keep defending a lie that no longer serves a purpose. The confession clears the family name and removes the last barrier to Dogtanian's acceptance into the Muskehounds.

Foreshadowing: Rochefort's growing desperation after Milady's failure signals that his loyalty to the conspiracy is weakening.

  • rochefort confession
  • father innocence
  • dogtanian family name cleared
Q9

How does Pip survive the gunshot meant for Dogtanian?

Pip survives the gunshot because a gold coin in his pocket absorbs the impact of the bullet, stopping it from causing a fatal wound. The coin acts as a small shield by chance, turning what should have been a tragic death into a narrow escape. This moment underscores the film's lighthearted tone, where serious danger is resolved through luck rather than lasting harm.

  • pip survives gunshot
  • gold coin
  • dogtanian saved
  • lucky escape
Q10

Why is Dogtanian finally inducted into the Muskehounds at the end?

Dogtanian earns his induction because he has completed every test of loyalty and skill the Muskehounds value: he rescued Juliette, recovered the diamond necklace, exposed Richelieu's war plot, and cleared his father's name. With Milady delivering the necklace safely to Queen Anne and his family's honor restored, no obstacle remains between Dogtanian and his dream. His induction marks the resolution of both his personal quest and the film's central conflict.

Foreshadowing: Treville's initial rejection set the standard Dogtanian had to meet, and every heroic act brings him closer to that goal.

  • dogtanian inducted
  • muskehounds
  • hero recognition
  • happy ending
Q11

What does Richelieu's vow of revenge at the end mean?

Richelieu's vow of revenge signals that, although the necklace plot has failed and Dogtanian has been honored, the Cardinal has not abandoned his larger ambition to seize power. His defeat is personal as well as political, since Dogtanian has humiliated him in front of the crown. The vow plants the seed for a sequel, promising future conflict between Dogtanian and Richelieu rather than a fully closed ending.

Foreshadowing: Richelieu's failed ambush with the gunshot shows how far he is willing to go to eliminate Dogtanian, foreshadowing that his hatred will not end with this defeat.

  • richelieu revenge
  • sequel setup
  • unresolved villain
  • dogtanian future
