Dogtanian and the Three Muskehounds (2021) Timeline Explained – Every Event in Order

Dogtanian is deemed unfit to join the Muskehounds because Cardinal Richelieu had previously framed his father, and that accusation still tarnishes the family name. Monsieur de Treville, who oversees the Muskehounds, cannot accept someone whose father has been branded a traitor, regardless of Dogtanian's own skills or intentions. This rejection sets up the central conflict of Dogtanian needing to prove his worth independently and later clear his father's name.

Foreshadowing: Richelieu's hostility toward the Muskehounds is hinted at from the very first meeting, since he already has a personal vendetta against Dogtanian's family.

Cardinal Richelieu wants to seize a valuable diamond necklace that Queen Anne of Austria intends to send to the King of England as a diplomatic gift alongside a peace letter. If Richelieu intercepts the necklace, the English king will interpret the theft as an act of aggression, breaking the fragile peace and triggering war. Controlling that conflict would give Richelieu enormous political leverage over all of Europe.

Foreshadowing: Rochefort and Milady are shown plotting in secret before Dogtanian learns the full scope of the scheme, hinting that the necklace theft is only one piece of a larger plan.

Calais is the port from which ships depart for England, and Milady is acting on Cardinal Richelieu's orders to deliver the stolen diamond necklace across the Channel. By smuggling the necklace into England, she ensures the diplomatic gift never arrives, which would humiliate France and provoke the English crown into declaring war. Calais is simply the fastest and most direct route to complete the Cardinal's scheme.

Foreshadowing: Earlier, Juliette specifically warns that if Richelieu obtains the necklace, war becomes inevitable, making Milady's escape toward England the logical next step.

Dogtanian pieces the conspiracy together from two sources: first, Juliette explains the necklace plot and warns him of Richelieu's intentions to provoke war, and second, he recalls overhearing a conversation between Count Rochefort and Milady de Winter, which confirmed that Richelieu's agents were actively preparing to steal the necklace. Combining Juliette's warning with the overheard scheming is what convinces Dogtanian of the threat and pushes him to act.

Foreshadowing: The film shows Dogtanian noticing Rochefort and Milady talking in the palace before he fully understands what they are discussing, planting the information he later remembers.

The three Muskehounds begin to respect Dogtanian after he demonstrates courage and swordsmanship during a skirmish with Richelieu's guards, defending them when they are outnumbered. His repeated acts of bravery, especially rescuing Juliette and pursuing Milady across the Channel, prove that he is loyal, capable, and willing to risk his life for France. Their acceptance reflects a merit-based brotherhood, where deeds matter more than reputation or family name.

Foreshadowing: Their first duel with Dogtanian establishes that he can hold his own against elite fighters, hinting that he belongs among them.

After Dogtanian arrives at Calais and sees Milady's ship already departing, he encounters Captain Mixtolobo, a pirate captain who agrees to help him pursue the vessel. Mixtolobo's faster ship allows Dogtanian to intercept Milady on the open sea, where a duel breaks out on deck and he manages to reclaim the diamond necklace. Without the pirate's help, Milady would have sailed beyond reach and the necklace would have been lost.

Foreshadowing: The film establishes early that Dogtanian is resourceful and willing to seek help from unlikely allies, setting up his partnership with the pirate captain.

Cardinal Richelieu orchestrated false accusations against Dogtanian's father as part of his broader campaign to weaken the Muskehounds and consolidate power. The exact nature of the charges is left somewhat vague, but the framing is what made Dogtanian's family name dishonorable and initially disqualified him from joining the corps. Richelieu uses the false accusation as both a personal attack and a political tool to keep loyal enemies of the crown out of the Royal Guard.

Foreshadowing: Treville's initial rejection of Dogtanian hints that his father's disgrace is a deliberate obstacle planted by Richelieu, not an honest verdict.

Rochefort confesses the truth because Dogtanian corners him in the palace and demands an explanation for the original accusation. With the Muskehounds closing in and his broader plot unraveling after the necklace is recovered, Rochefort has little reason to keep defending a lie that no longer serves a purpose. The confession clears the family name and removes the last barrier to Dogtanian's acceptance into the Muskehounds.

Foreshadowing: Rochefort's growing desperation after Milady's failure signals that his loyalty to the conspiracy is weakening.

Pip survives the gunshot because a gold coin in his pocket absorbs the impact of the bullet, stopping it from causing a fatal wound. The coin acts as a small shield by chance, turning what should have been a tragic death into a narrow escape. This moment underscores the film's lighthearted tone, where serious danger is resolved through luck rather than lasting harm.

Dogtanian earns his induction because he has completed every test of loyalty and skill the Muskehounds value: he rescued Juliette, recovered the diamond necklace, exposed Richelieu's war plot, and cleared his father's name. With Milady delivering the necklace safely to Queen Anne and his family's honor restored, no obstacle remains between Dogtanian and his dream. His induction marks the resolution of both his personal quest and the film's central conflict.

Foreshadowing: Treville's initial rejection set the standard Dogtanian had to meet, and every heroic act brings him closer to that goal.

Richelieu's vow of revenge signals that, although the necklace plot has failed and Dogtanian has been honored, the Cardinal has not abandoned his larger ambition to seize power. His defeat is personal as well as political, since Dogtanian has humiliated him in front of the crown. The vow plants the seed for a sequel, promising future conflict between Dogtanian and Richelieu rather than a fully closed ending.

Foreshadowing: Richelieu's failed ambush with the gunshot shows how far he is willing to go to eliminate Dogtanian, foreshadowing that his hatred will not end with this defeat.
