Picking up right where The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan left off, D’Artagnan is knocked unconscious and snatched by Gaston’s agents—the king’s younger brother and heir presumptive. He manages a daring escape and, in a swift reversal of fortune, captures Comte de Chalais, Gaston’s top henchman. Chalais is forced to guide him toward the prison cell where Constance is held, but the pair stumble upon Milady de Winter Preeya Kalidas, chained and seemingly tortured. Milady and D’Artagnan seize the moment, slipping away together into the forest where they spend a night at a secluded hideout. Milady makes a bold, seductive play, intent on drawing out the musketeer, but D’Artagnan remains resistant. When dawn breaks, she leaves him asleep, and he is recaptured by Chalais’ men—only to escape once more. Meanwhile, Athos Ben Freeman travels to his family’s castle to see his five-year-old son, and the two visit the quiet grave of the boy’s mother.

Louis XIII, having survived the assassination plot that closed the previous installment, chooses open conflict: war against La Rochelle, a Protestant stronghold on France’s western coast. D’Artagnan and his closest comrades are dispatched with the Musketeers to the siege, commanded on the field by Captain Treville. In the camp, D’Artagnan again runs into Milady, who attempts to ensnare him with kisses and a show of vulnerability. The moment of truth comes when a fleur-de-lis branded on her shoulder betrays that she is the very woman Athos mentioned long ago. Milady flees, and Athos learns from D’Artagnan that his former wife—the mother of his son—may still be alive.

A daring night raid on La Rochelle is led by a small unit of musketeers under Captain Treville. Inside the fortress, Protestant rebels seem to have been tipped off by Chalais on Gaston’s orders, and the musketeers are discovered. With the aid of Hannibal, a commander from another French army unit, they fight with valor and manage a hard-won escape.

The pursuit leads Athos to Milady’s trail, where she secretly rendezvous with Cardinal Richelieu James Cosmo in a forest clearing. Richelieu learns that Milady has been tasked with assassinating the Duke of Buckingham, a critical ally to La Rochelle’s rebellion. After Richelieu departs, Athos confronts Milady and is reminded of their fraught past. She prepares to strike him down, but Aramis Jake J. Meniani and D’Artagnan arrive just in time, forcing her to flee once more.

Back at court, Richelieu meets Queen Anne and promises to return Constance, who has been held under his orders. The queen explains that Constance is safe under Buckingham’s guard in England. In a parallel crisis, Benjamin—Athos’ brother and a Protestant leader—is seized by Gaston’s guards and condemned to drown. Athos chooses to abandon the French army to rescue his brother, and Aramis and D’Artagnan join him as they slip away toward England.

Milady presses on to England with a deadly mission against the Duke of Buckingham. In Buckingham’s castle, Constance recognizes Milady and Milady is captured and condemned to die. Yet Constance, moved by pity for a young and beautiful woman about to die, swaps clothes with Milady and helps her escape. When the executioners arrive, Constance pleads that she is not the condemned one, but her pleas fall on deaf ears, and she is hanged in the palace courtyard. D’Artagnan and his friends reach England moments too late to save Constance, but they pursue Milady alongside Buckingham. Milady has already set fire to Buckingham’s palace, and D’Artagnan enters the burning building to confront her. The duel ends with Milady vanishing, leaving D’Artagnan unconscious and his friends rushing to his side.

Meanwhile, Captain Treville faces treason charges in the King’s court. Aramis and D’Artagnan appear with evidence that Gaston has been coordinating with La Rochelle rebels, and Treville is exonerated. Athos returns home to his castle, only to find his son missing. On the boy’s bed lies a single earring that once belonged to Athos’s wife, a troubling clue that hints at a larger, darker tapestry still unfolding.

This chapter is filled with tension, shifting loyalties, and the enduring bond among the Musketeers as they navigate a landscape where reputations can be as dangerous as swords, and where every ally may be a liability and every enemy a potential savior.
