Ranveer Bobby Deol and Rajveer Sunny Deol are devoted brothers who leave their Punjab village behind to seek a better life in Mumbai. Along with their family, they navigate the challenges of a big city, where Ranveer takes on the heavy responsibility of looking after his younger brother. Through perseverance and hard work, Ranveer, with help from their father, gradually turns a string of hardships into solid success, and the family’s fortunes begin to rise. Rajveer, in contrast, lives with a reckless, carefree spirit that often puts him at odds with the world around him.

The opening scenes unfold with Ranveer inaugurating a hotel, a moment that becomes a lively party where Rajveer arrives later, accompanied by his foreign girlfriend. Their grandmother remains a steady presence in the family home, alongside their father, anchoring the brothers’ world even as city life pulls them in different directions.

Shalini [Preity Zinta] joins the same college as Rajveer and quickly becomes a focal point of attention on campus. Rajveer treats his pursuit of her as a joke, yet Shalini finds herself drawn to him in a way that feels sincere and transformative. She confesses her love and tells him of her plan to marry, assuming he feels the same. At first, Rajveer treats the admission lightly, which deeply hurts Shalini, who had fallen for him honestly.

Shalini’s hopes are tempered when a college rival, who has long claimed an interest in her, enlists hired goons to threaten Rajveer. Ranveer learns of the danger, rushes to Rajveer’s side, and the two men defend themselves against the aggressive assault. The conflict leaves Rajveer shaken but alive, while Ranveer’s loyalty to his brother remains unshaken.

Earlier in the story, Ranveer had already caught a fleeting glimpse of Shalini at a traffic signal and, from that moment, felt a stirring attraction. Later, at a wedding, he discovers her identity in a new light and decides to propose. He sends the proposal, but Shalini declines, convinced she loves someone else—Rajveer. This rejection rips at her, yet it does not erase her feelings for Rajveer, who is oblivious to Ranveer’s prior affection and the depth of Shalini’s devotion.

As time passes, Shalini and Ranveer grow closer, and love slowly blossoms between them. Shalini eventually accepts Ranveer’s marriage proposal, recognizing a genuine connection that comes from a shared sense of commitment and resilience. Meanwhile, Rajveer comes to realize his own love for Shalini and openly confesses it in front of Ranveer, not realizing that he is talking about the same woman. Ranveer encourages him to express his feelings, not suspecting that the two brothers are speaking of the same heart.

When Rajveer finally speaks to Shalini about his love, she gently refuses him. This rejection wounds Rajveer, who feels betrayed in the wake of the revelation, and in a moment of rage, he misreads the situation as a rival love triangle. He confronts Ranveer in a public setting, acting with crude disrespect toward him and Shalini. The emotional shock of the scene leaves both brothers stunned, and Rajveer’s anger drives him to a desperate decision.

In a blinding turn of despair, Rajveer attempts to end his own life by leaping from a bridge. Ranveer rushes after him to intervene, but a tragic accident occurs when a passing car strikes Ranveer, sending him into a coma. Shalini lashes out at Rajveer, blaming him for how their lives have been unsettled and torn apart by the ensuing chaos.

In a heartfelt turn, Rajveer finally apologizes to Ranveer, and the bond between the brothers begins to heal. When Ranveer awakens from the coma, he forgives Rajveer, acknowledging the shared pain they both endured. The resolution brings Shalini and Ranveer to a joyous union, and they marry amid a sense of renewal and hope.

The story closes with Rajveer returning to his village, where he meets a woman named Rani and finds the possibility of love anew, suggesting that life beyond Mumbai holds its own promise for a new beginning.
