Twelve-year-old Ann Uekusa and her mother Miwako Uegusa move to the quiet town of Shimane, where grandparents live nearby and the rhythms of daily life feel intimate and small-town predictable. In this setting, Ann quickly becomes part of a tight-knit circle: she befriends local boy Daigo Kitamura, as well as Fuji Tsukishima and his younger sister and closest ally, Shiika Tsukishima. The town’s familiarity gives Ann a sense of belonging, even as the shared routines conceal the more turbulent undercurrents that will begin to shape her future.

When Miwako dies by suicide, Daigo becomes a steady source of support for Ann, helping her weather an unimaginable loss. The two grow closer, and a quiet, tender love blooms between them, even as the world around them grows more complicated. The arrival of Ann’s estranged father from Tokyo compounds the upheaval, testing her sense of home and family. After much soul-searching, she chooses to stay in Shimane, telling Daigo about her decision and trying to navigate what that choice means for their relationship. Meanwhile, Daigo faces his own social anxieties, resisting Shika and contending with rumors that he is drawn to his middle school classmate Ayumu, who has been helping him study for university and a future as a teacher. The narrative widens its lens to the broader arc of adulthood, as Ann approaches graduation and learns that her father and his friend Kaede Kuroki have begun dating, with the surprising twist that Ann is pregnant with her half-sister. The revelation deepens the sense that family history and fate are inescapable threads weaving through every choice.

A middle school reunion becomes a turning point. After reconnecting with old friends, Ann spends more time with Daigo, who urges her to find her own happiness. Six years pass before a new chapter begins: Ann meets a young businessman, Keiichiro Sakura, and they become engaged. Yet his selective, self-serving nature clashes with Ann’s growing insistence on genuine respect and reciprocity, and she ends the engagement when she recognizes his true character.

A week later, she travels to Okayama, where Daigo now teaches elementary school. Ann’s grandmother clings to a fatalistic view of Ann’s fate, fearing a repetition of her mother’s tragedy. A dramatic turn arrives when Ann tries to end her life again on a beach; she survives and is hospitalized, where Daigo re-enters her life with a candid, life-affirming proposal. He asks her to marry him, and she accepts, setting the stage for a hopeful, shared future. The film closes on a note of quiet, enduring happiness: Ann and Daigo are shown as a married couple with an infant son named Ryo, their past hardships tempered by the strength of their bond.
