Jackson wakes to find his home and barn ablaze as Mexican bandits have taken his wife. He manages to shoot one attacker before trying to dig something up in the smoke-filled barn, but the flames overpower him. Exhausted, he vows to pursue the bandits southward.

By daybreak, neighbors wake him to the destruction. He retrieves a package from the night before and tells them he is setting out south to track down the bandits. The journey begins with him traveling into the unknown.

On the trail, Jackson encounters the dying bandit he shot. The man curses him as 'damned' before death. From the body, Jackson discovers two silver pieces and steels himself to keep moving.

One morning at a water source, a Native American shoots two arrows toward him. Jackson flanks the position and discovers a frightened boy, whom he drives away. The encounter foreshadows the dangerous, shifting alliances he will meet on the road.

A Chinese man repairing a wagon blocks the road and demands a toll of five silver pieces. Ezra suddenly appears behind him and shoots the man dead. After a cryptic exchange, Jackson fights Ezra, but Ezra vanishes when Jackson reaches for his gun.

Moments later, Jackson is shot when the Mexicans ambush him in the open. He crawls along as infection sets in, and Ezra finds him again, claiming he will stay with him to watch him die.

After medical treatment, Jackson wakes to a Native American boy guiding him toward his village. The tribe tests him with peyote to determine if he is evil, leading to a night in a sweat lodge and a hallucinatory journey.

The boy gives him his horse, and Jackson attempts to give the boy his gun, but the others drive him off. As soon as Jackson sets off, Ezra appears and silently kills the two adults as the boy escapes.

Jackson arrives at Mr. Carver's farm, where he once served in the Civil War, and asks for a saddle and water for his horse. Carver warns that Jackson is dangerous and sends him to a shed, while his granddaughter Rebecca watches warily.

During the standoff, Ezra is revealed to be Jackson, suffering from a traumatic personality disorder. He murders Carver and leaves, the act underscoring the split inside Jackson's mind.

Jackson finally catches up with the Mexicans and reaches his wife, who flees toward their homestead. He kills several men as Alexsandra takes cover, and she reveals that their 'love' was a fantasy; she remains with Guillermo, distracting him with a kiss before she shoots Jackson with her last bullet.

Jackson confronts Guillermo in the shadow of the homestead as the scene ends with a gunshot and the screen cutting to black, leaving his fate ambiguous. The clash seals a life defined by violence and a fractured sense of self.
