Paul Kersey is introduced as a dedicated trauma surgeon living in Chicago. He shares a loving relationship with his wife, Lucy, and their daughter, Jordan, setting the stage for their normal family life.

During a routine lunch, Paul's brother Frank asks for a loan to settle a debt. Paul reluctantly agrees to help Frank, a decision that inadvertently sets off a chain of tragic events for the Kersey family.
