Steve Thompson returns to Los Angeles after two years of drifting and a painful divorce, tormented by the thought of seeing his ex-wife Anna again. He searches for her, knowing a reunion would reopen old wounds. He also reluctantly resumes his former job as an armored-truck driver to begin rebuilding his life.

Anna marries the mobster Slim Dundee despite Steve's family and friends opposing the union.
