Cries Unheard: The Donna Yaklich Story

Donna <a href="/actor/hilary-swank">Hilary Swank</a> returns to her hometown in Colorado for the summer after living in California, where she reconnects with her past and begins a complex emotional journey. During her visit, she quickly meets Dennis <a href="/actor/brad-johnson">Brad Johnson</a>, a former aerobics instructor and current police officer, and is immediately drawn to him. Their connection grows rapidly, and she also encounters his teenage stepdaughter Patty. Patty, portrayed with raw emotion by <a href="/actor/carolyn-mccormick">Carolyn McCormick</a>, is still mourning her mother’s death due to an allergic reaction, especially since their last encounter was marked by an argument, leaving her feeling vulnerable and upset. Donna, sensing Patty’s pain, is moved by her and decides not to return to California, choosing instead to stay and care for Patty. She moves in with Dennis and soon becomes engaged to him, believing she has found love and a sense of belonging.

However, their budding romance is short-lived, marred by Dennis’s increasing instability. After facing insults at the gym, Dennis begins injecting steroids, which lead to dangerous mood swings and violent outbursts. His behavior becomes erratic, and one night, unable to sleep, he commands Donna to leave the room, then starts lifting weights in a fit of rage. When Donna asks him to come back to bed, he violently orders her out again, terrifying her. Frightened, Donna confides in her sister Susie, but finds herself powerless to intervene as Dennis begs Susie to take him back, revealing his vulnerability. Despite their marriage, Dennis’s outbursts continue, and during the wedding ceremony, his wrath surfaces again, forcing Donna to spend her wedding night feeling scared and unsettled. Patty later explains that Dennis’s aggressive behavior is linked to steroid abuse, which he even uses professionally to catch criminals in unconventional ways.

Donna’s life takes a darker turn when she becomes pregnant and asks Dennis to stop using steroids, fearing for her safety and that of their unborn child. Unfortunately, Dennis's aggression does not subside, and he eventually rapes Donna while their newborn cries nearby. When she attempts to leave with their son Denny, Dennis kidnaps Donna and keeps her captive, threatening her life and demanding she stay silent. She reaches out to Dennis’s friend Jerry and asks him to intervene, but Jerry betrays her trust by revealing their conversation to Dennis. In a terrifying escalation, Dennis threatens to kill Donna or Susie if she ever tries to escape again, then assaults Donna again.

Over the next five years, Donna dedicates herself to raising Denny, while Dennis becomes obsessed with the gym and steroids. When Patty announces her pregnancy, Dennis blames Donna for her pregnancy and forces her to express disgust for Patty, ordering her to leave the house forever. Feeling trapped and terrified, Donna flees with Denny to a shelter. Dennis, abusing his authority, manipulates her into returning home and menaces Susie, threatening to kill her and dismember her if Donna leaves again, boasting about getting away with murder. Donna, broken and desperate, recalls that Dennis’s first wife met a mysterious end, which Dennis mocks. When Donna expresses her despair and desire to die, Dennis offers her his gun and aims it at her, only to hear a click — a chilling moment that underscores their volatile relationship. He dismisses her fears and claims they are just "having marital problems."

With her life at risk, Donna makes the difficult decision to pay Eddie <a href="/actor/ramsay-midwood">Ramsay Midwood</a> to murder Dennis. With Eddie’s brother Charlie <a href="/actor/jason-kristofer">Jason Kristofer</a>, Eddie carries out the plan at night as Dennis parks his truck in the driveway. However, Donna’s relief is short-lived; Charlie’s girlfriend eventually exposes their involvement in the murder, leading to Donna’s arrest during a seemingly ordinary lunch with Susie. The shocking revelation leaves Susie in disbelief and Donna in shock as her life spirals further into chaos.

In her prison cell, Donna reflects on her ordeal in a heartfelt conversation with Denny< a href="/actor/david-lascher">David Lascher</a>, now a grown man. She describes her trial as a media frenzy and admits her primary concern was whether she would be separated from Denny. Though she is acquitted of first-degree murder, Donna is convicted of conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to 40 years in prison. Her appeal is denied because the judge believes she deserved an even harsher punishment, given her involvement. Meanwhile, Denny grows up under Susie’s care, feeling conflicted about his mother’s actions. He confronts Donna, criticizing her for the pain her choices caused and the hardships he endured, even suggesting that she might have avoided prison if she had taken more drastic action herself. Donna admits that although she couldn’t bring herself to pull the trigger, she would do it again because she fears Dennis would have killed her eventually. Despite everything, Denny, now heading to college in San Francisco, reassures her that his love remains steadfast, even if he resents her for missing parts of his life.

The film concludes with Donna’s voiceover, highlighting the stark differences in sentencing between men and women for spousal murder — with women often receiving 30–40 years, and men only 2–6 years. She mentions that she was eligible for parole after serving 18 years, a somber reflection on justice, regret, and the complex nature of her choices.
