Murdered By My Boyfriend

This film is based on the true story of Casey Brittle, who was beaten to death by her boyfriend in Nottingham in 2010. The narrative centers on 17-year-old Ashley Georgina Campbell as she meets Reece [Royce Pierreson] at a house party and begins a relationship that draws her in with charm, only to reveal a troubling, controlling edge. At first, Ashley is swept off her feet by Reece’s looks and smooth confidence, but his behavior soon grows possessive: he decides what she can wear, checks her texts and Facebook, and routinely insults her appearance, dragging her into a pattern of manipulation that hides beneath a veneer of affection.

Within three months, Ashley becomes pregnant and Reece persuades her to keep the baby. When he strikes her while she’s heavily pregnant, she contemplates leaving, yet returns after he promises never to hurt her again. Three years pass, and they are living together with their young daughter Jasmine Viola Johnson. Reece’s violence intensifies, impacting every corner of Ashley’s life, and when she confides in her best friend Kim Simona Brown and shows her bruises, Kim pleads with her to leave. But Ashley struggles to see an easy exit, telling Kim that it isn’t that simple and that there are moments when the relationship feels meaningful.

One afternoon at work in a clothing store, Reece storms in, headbutts Ashley, and drags her into a fitting room to beat her. A colleague calls the police, and Ashley finally ends the relationship. Later, during a night out in Leicester, Ashley sleeps with another man, yet he makes clear he doesn’t want to pursue it because Reece won’t allow any separation to go forward. Reece initially leaves Ashley alone, but over time he returns; despite constant berating and little help from the police, she finds herself pulled back into the union. Reece proposes, and Ashley reluctantly accepts.

One night after Reece stumbles home drunk, he asks Ashley if she slept with anyone while they were apart. When she answers honestly, he erupts and beats her to death with an ironing board, while Jasmine watches in tears. The aftermath sees justice evolve as the case what happened is reflected in the courtroom: Reece is initially sentenced to fifteen years in prison, but his sentence is later increased to twenty years on appeal due to the violent nature of the assault that led to Ashley’s death.
