Coldwater

Brad was sent to Coldwater after a series of troubled events in his life. He had a strained relationship with his mother and her new boyfriend, who was also behind bars for low-level drug dealing and for his involvement in the death of Brad's girlfriend, Erin. These personal circumstances led authorities to send him to the wilderness reform facility.

During an overnight punishment at the facility, an inmate was handcuffed to a ceiling and left there, resulting in the inmate being maimed and permanently injured. This incident revealed the extreme and dangerous level of punishment used by the staff and intensified tensions between the inmates and the personnel.

The brutal environment established early in the film hints at the staff's willingness to cause serious harm.

Brad blamed Gabriel for the water prank to buy time and deflect suspicion from himself while he planned his investigation. The deception allowed Brad to continue gathering evidence about the facility's abuses without alerting the staff to his broader goals of exposing the truth.

Brad stole a master key that gave him access to nearly every part of the facility. He then freed Gabriel from the torture shed, stole medical files documenting each inmate's injuries, cross-referenced them with his own observations, and mailed the compiled dossier to the sheriff's department via a mail drop at the end of a hiking trail.

During the inmate uprising, Brad confronted Reichert in his office and shot him. He then staged the scene as a suicide to obscure the truth and shield himself from immediate legal consequences. This act marked the climax of the uprising and the collapse of the facility's control.

Brad was released from police custody without charges after the massacre at Coldwater. As the investigation continued into the abuses at the facility, he was picked up by his mother, providing a fragile sense of normalcy. News broadcasts showed the shocking footage of the carnage at the facility.

Josh was a staff member at Coldwater who became a focal point of conflict. He was involved in the harsh punishments and eventually challenged Brad to a fight after tensions escalated. Josh was also the one who discovered the gas can had been filled with water, forcing him to push the car back to camp while a drunken Reichert passed out.

The inmates rose up after Brad provided them with documentation proving the systematic abuse and injuries inflicted upon them. Armed with this evidence, they were driven by a need for accountability and protection from the brutal regime, leading to a violent confrontation with the staff.

After a drunken Reichert attempted to drive and ran out of fuel, Josh was tasked with refilling the car. He discovered the gas can had been filled with water instead of fuel, forcing him to push the car back to camp while Reichert passed out in the passenger seat. This humiliating incident exposed the staff's dysfunction.

Brad did attempt to escape from Coldwater at one point, but a sheriff's deputy who was concerned by what Brad had disclosed about the abuses returned him to the camp. This failed escape attempt did not stop Brad from continuing to plan his investigation from within.

Reichert's alcoholism worsened throughout the film as his personal demons, failed family life and war-tired temperament, took their toll. His day drinking became more conspicuous, and his weak leadership caused the staff to ratchet up pressure on the inmates, contributing to the facility's deterioration and eventual collapse.

Gabriel was Brad's best friend who eventually joined him at Coldwater. Together they formed a tense but crucial bond amid the harsh environment. Their friendship became vital as the abuse escalated, though Brad temporarily blamed Gabriel for the water prank to protect his investigative plans.
