A lonely twentysomething named Becky Green becomes obsessed with the suicide of her estranged childhood friend Chloe. To chase answers and a sense of belonging, she adopts a bold new identity—Sasha—and engineers a series of chance encounters designed to slip into Chloe’s orbit. A series of flashbacks reveals Becky had two missed calls from Chloe just minutes before the death, hinting at a more complicated, unresolved timeline. In Sasha’s ongoing pursuit of truth, Becky uncovers the secret activities Chloe had kept hidden from those closest to her, including her husband and the rest of the group.

Becky then begins an affair with Chloe’s widowed husband, Elliot, a relationship that sparks disapproval within the circle, including from Elliot’s mother. As the political arc unfolds, Elliot decides to run for election, and Becky and Livia become involved in his campaign alongside Elliot’s friend Nish, blending personal intrigue with public ambition.

Her investigation drives Becky to question each member of Chloe’s circle to determine whether Chloe was trying to escape a controlling partner who allegedly pressured her to take medication and controlled her finances. The plan to help her escape falters when Richard—the ally who was supposed to assist—does not show up. Chloe goes to her parents’ house, where her mother informs Elliot of her whereabouts; Elliot arrives to collect her, but Chloe runs from him and dies, the circumstances hinting at a night of violence rather than a simple flight.

Livia then exposes Becky, fracturing the group and leaving Becky ostracized. In a final, stark moment, Becky records Elliot’s angry outburst and posts it on Instagram from Chloe’s account, a provocative act that tests loyalties and seals the rift with the people she hoped to impress or save.

The story closes with a tentative peace: Livia and Becky meet one last time to seek reconciliation, and Becky hands Livia her new number before walking away, carrying with her the fragile hope of a life rebuilt on truth rather than deception.
