Becky Green, Erin Doherty, is a lonely twenty-something who becomes obsessed with the suicide of her estranged childhood friend Chloe and adopts a daring new identity as Sasha to engineer a “chance” meeting with Chloe’s inner circle. The first target she aims to connect with is Chloe Fairbourne, Poppy Gilbert, whose close-knit group gathers around art and shared rituals. Sasha makes a deliberate, patient push, showing up first at an art event and then again at a yoga class, gradually weaving herself into the circle and into Chloe’s orbit.

Sasha’s infiltration deepens as Becky, through the alter-ego, gains access to Chloe’s world and uses Livia Fulton, Pippa Bennett-Warner, and her network to secure a role that stretches Becky beyond her real experience. The life Sasha offers is dramatically more thrilling than Becky’s ordinary existence, and the line between performance and reality begins to blur as she steps further into Chloe’s confidences and routines. In the background, Becky’s mother Pam Green, Lisa Palfrey, watches with a wary eye as the situation grows increasingly tangled, hinting at the costs of secrecy and longing.

A series of flashbacks reveals that Becky had two missed calls from Chloe mere minutes before Chloe’s death, a detail that gnaws at Becky as Sasha. As the alter-ego, Becky slowly uncovers Chloe’s clandestine activities—truths Chloe kept hidden from her husband and from the rest of the group—and each new revelation reshapes Becky’s understanding of what Chloe was trying to escape from.

Becky’s new life also brings a dangerous romance into play: she begins an affair with Chloe’s widowed husband, Elliot Fairbourne, Billy Howle. Their relationship draws stern disapproval from the rest of the group, including Elliot’s mother, and it complicates the fragile web of loyalties that holds the circle together. To support Elliot’s political ambitions, Becky and Livia work to run his campaign, joining forces with Elliot’s friend Nish in a motion-heavy production of public life that contrasts with the private chaos of Chloe’s death.

The investigation intensifies as Becky questions each member of Chloe’s circle, seeking evidence about whether Chloe was attempting to free herself from an increasingly controlling partner who may have manipulated her medications and finances. The tension peaks when the night of Chloe’s planned escape arrives and Richard Greenbank, Jack Farthing, the person designated to help, fails to show up. Chloe escapes to her parents’ house, where her mother informs Elliot of her whereabouts, and Elliot arrives to pick Chloe up. Chloe runs from him, a moment that ends in tragedy, with Chloe dead—an outcome that appears to be the result of Elliot’s actions.

After Chloe’s death, Livia exposes Becky, and the rest of the group turns away, leaving Becky isolated in the wake of the unraveling truth. In a final, provocative moment, Becky confronts Elliot one last time and records his angry outburst, posting it on Chloe’s account to lay bare his toxicity for all to see. The story moves toward a tentative reconciliation as Livia and Becky meet again to find some common ground; Becky gives Livia her new number, signaling the potential to redefine their fragile connection.

Through it all, the film threads themes of obsession, identity, and the seductive pull of a life that seems more vivid than reality, while maintaining a measured, even-handed tone that invites reflection on how far someone might go to feel seen, heard, or understood.
