Helen Lyle, portrayed by Virginia Madsen, is a privileged young woman conducting research for her master’s thesis on contemporary folklore alongside her attentive friend Bernadette “Bernie” Walsh. She is married to the university professor Trevor Lyle, played by Xander Berkeley, yet their relationship is marred by Helen’s suspicions regarding his fidelity with a younger student. Their lives take a dark turn as Helen and Bernie explore urban legend stories, one particularly chilling tale about Candyman, a mythical figure known for his lethal hook-hand and the curse associated with saying his name five times while looking in a mirror.
In a twisted demonstration of fear and bravado, a character named Clara, played by Marianna Elliott, dares her boyfriend, Ted Raimi, to utter Candyman’s name in front of the mirror. His reluctance turns fatal when Clara, in a moment of defiance, repeats the name for a fifth time, summoning Candyman, who fatally strikes her from behind.
One night, while reviewing recorded interviews alone at the university, Helen’s curiosity leads her to a conversation overheard by a cleaning woman at the school. The woman, Henrietta Mosely, guides Helen to a darker history involving murders in Cabrini-Green, Chicago—a notorious housing project. The residents attribute these homicides to Candyman, whose victims have all met gruesome fates reminiscent of the urban legend. Helen’s research reveals eerie parallels, such as the architecture of her own building being strikingly similar to Cabrini-Green.
Determined to get to the truth, Helen visits Cabrini-Green with Bernie, where they uncover a former victim’s apartment, discovering a peculiar lair rich with graffiti representing a large man’s head and a makeshift altar adorned with candy offerings. Their investigation connects them with Anne-Marie McCoy, played by Vanessa Williams, who initially distrusts them but later emphasizes her desire to protect her son from the dangerous environment of Cabrini-Green.
During a tense dinner with Trevor and his colleagues, Helen unknowingly draws the ire of folklore expert Philip Purcell, who cites Candyman’s tragic backstory—once a talented artist wronged by a wealthy white man—further captivating Helen’s interest. When she returns to Cabrini-Green, a confrontation with a group of local youths escalates into violence, resulting in her assault and subsequent rescue by Detective Frank Valento.
As Helen grapples with the aftermath of her experiences, a haunting sense of her own white privilege becomes apparent, especially when contrasted with the disregard for the victims in Cabrini-Green. While reflecting on her encounters, she is confronted by the eerie figure of Candyman, who implores her to accept her fate as he threatens her existence and legacy.
Overwhelmed by confusion and horror, Helen awakens in Anne-Marie’s apartment, bloodied and disoriented, only to discover the aftermath of a brutal attack that results in the decapitation of Anne-Marie’s dog and the disappearance of her son. This sets off a cascade of tragic events, leading Helen to be wrongfully implicated in the crimes. As she navigates a series of harrowing detentions and escapes from hospital confinement, her descent into Candyman’s terrifying world deepens.
Desperate and alone, Helen finds Trevor, who has moved on to a new life without her, igniting her resolve to confront Candyman within his lair. There, she realizes her spectral connection to him and recognizes her role as his lost love. In a chaotic climax involving a desperate attempt to save Anne-Marie’s son from a pyre, Helen sacrifices herself in the flames, extinguishing Candyman while redeeming her own legacy.
At her funeral, attended by few, the surprised mourners witness a procession of Cabrini-Green residents, including Anne-Marie and a pivotal young boy named Jake, who signifies Candyman’s enduring influence by dropping the killer’s hook into her grave. As Trevor attempts to move on, Helen’s vengeful spirit returns to him, highlighting that her legend is far from over, with dire consequences for those who wronged her.
“Her own legend has just begun.”
