Married couple Jeff and Amy Taylor set out from Boston for a much-anticipated vacation to California. Their excitement is palpable as they hit the road, eager for the adventures that lie ahead.

While driving through rural New Mexico, Jeff and Amy have a near-collision with an oncoming truck, which sets off a chain of troubling events. At a gas station shortly afterward, Jeff is confronted by the truck’s aggressive driver, cowboy Earl, who berates him for the careless driving mistake.

The couple's troubles deepen when their car unexpectedly breaks down in the desert. Jeff stays behind to fix the car while Amy, seeking help, accepts a ride from a seemingly friendly trucker named Red Barr.

After fixing the car, Jeff arrives at a diner only to find that no one has seen Amy. Growing frantic, he drives to the nearest police station, but the sheriff expresses skepticism and encourages him to file a missing person's report, providing little hope.

Back at the diner, Jeff's inquiries about Amy infuriate the owner and patrons. He faces a threatening encounter at gunpoint, revealing the hostile atmosphere of the town and the lack of assistance he receives.

In his desperation, Jeff meets a local mechanic named Billy, who claims to have seen Amy with Red. Despite his naïveté, Billy hints at the police's potential complicity and provides Jeff with directions to pursue the truckers.

Following Billy's directions, Jeff goes on a pursuit to rescue Amy but is ambushed by Earl. After a heart-pounding chase, Jeff makes the daring decision to plunge his Jeep into a river to escape Earl's clutches.

Inside the bank, Jeff is forced to devise a plan to get help. Ultimately, he panics and abandons his original idea but cleverly steals markers and a letter opener to create a fake bundle of cash for the ransom.

After leaving the bank, Jeff is picked up by Earl, who mocks him about how easily he and Amy have been manipulated. Jeff seizes the moment to extract crucial information about Amy's whereabouts from the unsuspecting Earl.
