On a Christmas Eve road trip gone wrong, Sgt. Archie Sparks, an experienced MP, finally closes in on Meredith Cole, a corporal accused of assaulting a commanding officer. But as soon as his back is turned, Meredith escapes custody once more, setting the stage for a perilous night on the road.
Meredith Cole ends up aboard an American Auto Coach headed for El Paso, sharing the cramped space with an unlikely mix of passengers who hope for a quiet, uneventful ride. The mood shifts quickly when a group of meth-addicted bikers appears, taunting the travelers and performing reckless stunts around the bus. A deadly miscalculation by one rider ends with the bus striking him, and the surviving bikers vow revenge. The driver, Danny Gunn, bravely stops the coach to help, but the momentary mercy is shattered as one of the bikers shoots him in the head, wounding Meredith and a fellow passenger, Joey Ryan.
The tension escalates as the passengers scramble for safety. Jerry Yarbro, a high school football coach accused of assaulting a student, salvages the biker’s weapon, while Walter Lindley quietly secures Danny’s keys. With no reliable phone service, the battered group drives away from danger, trying to outrun the relentless pursuit of the bikers. The chaos takes a personal toll when Joey Ryan succumbs to her injuries, leaving the survivors shaken and more determined to live through the night.
The remaining passengers form a ragtag alliance: Maudie McMinn, a determined single mother and marathon runner; Sam Cutter, a moody, conflicted father; Desiree, a tough woman with a wary boyfriend named Duke; Annabel Drake, a vegan and archery competitor; Ramon Vargas, a Spanish-speaking electrician; and others whose backstories add texture to the tense dynamic. Under Jerry’s lead, they decide to divert the bus down a deserted side road and push toward safety. The bikers force the bus off the road into a junkyard, where a wrecked boat becomes a brutal obstacle and Walter Lindley is killed. The group improvises a bunker-like defense, using whatever weapons and tools they can scavenge, while Jerry’s anger management issues simmer just beneath the surface.
In a pivotal turn, Maudie volunteers to cross twenty miles of desert to reach the nearest town and summon help, her endurance a beacon of hope for the stranded group. Inside the bunker, the survivors improvise a plan to hold out long enough for reinforcement: Maudie, with her athletic stamina, makes the desert crossing and returns with reinforcements, including Sgt. Archie Sparks, who lends his expertise to the fight. Together, they strike back at the bikers, killing several of the attackers and turning the tide of the confrontation. The battle leaves Ramon injured and results in the deaths of Duke, Desiree, and Jerry, but the remaining survivors—Sam, Meredith, Annabel, and Ramon—are rescued and transported to the nearest town by Maudie and Archie.
At the hospital, Maudie is reunited with her daughters, a quiet relief after the brutal ordeal. Meredith, however, evades the authorities once more, aided by Archie, and joins Sam and Annabel as they continue their nomadic journey on the road in a minivan, heading toward an uncertain but hopeful horizon. The night on the bus leaves a mark on everyone involved, testing loyalty, resolve, and the will to survive in a landscape where danger can arrive with the dawn.
